Vintage Rose Technique of the Month A Judy Niemeyer Pattern Taught by

Gretchen Veteran Judy Niemeyer Certified Instructor

This pattern is the fourth in a series that Judy has designed to learn her paper-piecing techniques while creating a beautiful heirloom quilt. No paper-piecing experience is necessary to join this class. Anyone with basic sewing skills can learn to make this quilt. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of selecting fabrics for this quilt.  Scruffy Quilts and Gretchen will be happy to help you with this process. Supplies:                    

Pattern in the wall-size or queen-size version. The queen is sold as a complete pattern, not an extension to the wall size. Thread to blend with your fabrics – I use Aurifil Iron and pressing mat – Most shops will have ironing equipment available for group use Medium sized cutting mat to fit by your machine; 17” x 24” is a good size Rotary cutter, 45mm and 60mm with new blades (for first class an old blade is OK as you will be cutting paper). Scissors – for cutting paper and another for fabric 24” x 6 or 6 ½” ruler 12” x 6 or 6 ½” ruler 12” or 18” Add a Quarter Ruler Fine Glass head pins Sewing machine with a ¼” foot for quilt assembly and a regular foot for paper-piecing. Glue Pen (Fons & Porter, Sewline, or Avery) Fabric Glue Stick – UHU brand or other. I will provide this for each student Plastic template – I will provide this for each student Purple Thang Size 70/10 Sharp (Microtex) sewing machine needles Large paper clips Gallon Zip Loc bags Highlighter pen for marking your pattern Basic sewing items

Pre-work before first class:  Read Booklet One, Introduction pages 1-5.  Glue pieces of your fabrics to the “color swatch” boxes on page 7-11. Don’t worry if this is confusing , Gretchen will go over this in class  Booklet 2; Cut out the paper NP 433. For the Unit A pieces, cut out about ¼” outside the dark line. For the other pieces, cut right along the outside dark line. Follow the instructions for placing the pieces in two Ziploc bags.  If you know your fabrics, glue fabric swatches to the chart on page 1 of Booklet 2.  Booklet 4; Cut out the paper NP 436, leaving about ¼” or less on the outside of the dark line. Cut out TP 256 pieces right along the outside dark line. Place the pieces into a Ziploc bag.  If you know your fabrics, glue fabric swatches to the chart on pages 1-2 of Booklet 4.
