The Organizing Principles of Consciousness

The organizing principle Munay And some time take the time to drive out west into County Clare, along the flaggy shore,

Wade Davis, The Wayfinders

in September or October, when the wind and the light are working off each other so that the ocean on one side is wild with foam and glitter, and inland among stones the surface of a slate-grey lake is lit by the earthed lightning of a flock of swans, their feathers roughed and ruffling, white on white, their fully grown headstrong-looking heads tucked or cresting or busy under water. Useless to think you’ll park and capture it more thoroughly. You are neither here nor there, a hurry through which known and strange things pass, as big soft buffetings come at the car sideways and catch the heart off guard and blow it open. – Seamus Heaney

Munay As you open your awareness to being organized by the princple called munay, remember that the organizing principles operate simultaneously. When you’ve practiced shifting to luminous awareness enough to realize that the shift itself organizes your full awareness by pacha, you’ll instantaneously know that you’re also organized by munay. In full presence, not constrained by time, your natural relational intelligence perceives, and delivers into awreness, everything as it is in the moment of experience. It does this every moment, so you are always current. On the other hand, when we allow ourselves to be organized by time [which itself is a linear event] we are also organized by past and present, and so certain aspects of our experience and environment are suddenly perceived as behind us or in front of us, accessible or inaccessible, and immediately we’re limited. Our hearts cannot be blown wide open to possibility and thriving if we are not fully conscious, fully present, and in full knowledge of the principles that organize sensory, experiential data into wisdom.

Seamus Heaney’s poem gives us an incredibly beautiful description of this dimension-filled experience – full presence, organized by pacha and munay at once. It also gives you the caution – you can’t capture this experience in a copy, a construct, or anything at all controlled. You have to be ‘here’, in the experience. Then you are here in munay. 11044 PEAKS PIKE ROAD | SEBASTOPOL CA 95472 | 707 874 9578 | [email protected] | MARTISPIEGELMAN.ORG

The Organizing Principles of Consciousness

About Munay / page 2 In the quechua language munay has many layers of meaning. As a verb it means ‘to love’. A common expression is munaytawan, which means ‘with love’. Munaycha refers to something really wonderful, something you love. Munay is also the name of a perceptual state – imagine perceiving the world in a state of total acceptance and love! And munay is the name of the organizing principle that, when embodied, organizes your awareness in such a way that you are in a state of unconditional acceptance of what is so – just as it is – no agenda, opinion, measuring, conditionality, attachment to outcome. As indigenous people say so often, ‘that’s the way it is’. It is an extraordinary state of awareness in which things are known directly, and so need no proof. Organized by pacha and munay and the other principles we’ll learning, there is no need to spend time and resources explaining why or proclaiming rationales. Where a western person always wants to know the why, how, what, and when, an indigenous person will say it is already known, and clear action can be taken now. If you press an indigenous person for detail, they’ll likely tell you ‘That’s all I can say.’ This very sophisticated state of awareness has been not been understood for what it is by western science and anthropology – an amazingly powerful and multi-dimensional way of knowing the world that does not require any of the ‘feasibility’ studies we waste so much time and money on. When human conscousness is full – and this is what we are discussing with the organizing principles – all of our creative, innovative actions begin at a much higher level than we currently imagine possible. Let’s take a moment to remember that the organizing principles are the core technology of consciousness, the key organizers of everything we know, and taken altogether, they are the ‘producers’ of the magic we’re designed to make. These principles are only accessible – meaning you can only organize your awareness by them – by shifting to full luminous awareness. Once in luminous awareness, you’re in a fully active state, NOT a passive state. In addition, one of the hallmarks of being in luminous awareness is that your sensing intelligence – also called your experiential intelligence – is in the driver’s seat, and your linear/reflective intelligence is at the ready to serve your relational mind in its intelligence gathering and creative responses to life itself.

The powers and outcomes of munay When you are organized by munay, you experience [which means you know] everything just as it is. You might be wondering about this – don’t we have our personal filters? isn’t experience subjective? Experience is only subjective if we are in ordinary awareness, with our awareness focused on the ego structure. In this state, we are subject to our limbic filters. [The limbic system is the part of the brain that combines 11044 PEAKS PIKE ROAD | SEBASTOPOL CA 95472 | 707 874 9578 | [email protected] | MARTISPIEGELMAN.ORG experience with emotional response to experience.]

The Organizing Principles of Consciousness

About Munay / page 3 The magic of being organized by the principle of munay is that you are not running personal energies – you are not in a state where your personal preferences come to the fore, or any personal reactivity will be triggered and create interference in your visionary channels. In luminous awareness, where we have access to the technologies of consciousness, we have just the facts of life in all of their incredible dimension. We are in our most creative state because we have access to orders of magnitude more information than we do in isolated linear awareness, and we have the innovative powers of our relational mind running at full power. Our discussion so far gives us a neurophysiological view, which is useful to the modern mind, but doesn’t go quite deep enough. To really touch your heart, let’s take a look at the teachings about munay from Don Manuel Quispe, who for many years was the leader of Q’ero nation in the Andes, among the original keepers of this technology of consciousness. Here are some things Don Manuel said about munay: • Munay is the nexus of membership. This means it is the core technology that brings us together and sets us into collective action, doing what we each do best with collective efficiency for global benefit – no one left behind! Don Manuel always taught us that our membership – our belonging – is to the earth, the clouds, the rivers, the mountains, to one another, to the whole cosmos. And he would say that in active membership there is no ego; if ego is active there is no room for membership. In this state you are accepted and you can accept. Munay and membership are inseparable. As the West African elders will tell you, our belonging is half of our identity, and our unique genius – our talent and passion – is the other half. We require belonging in order for our unique genius to express itself. This is what makes us whole and available to full consciousness! • Munay is the bridge to full life, the bridge from vision to manifestation. He is telling us that we cannot successfully create without the principle of munay organizing our consciousness – and by ‘successfully’ we mean that life is supported and in no way are sources depleted. Practice organizing your awareness by pacha and munay and experience the difference. Even if you don’t have a club you belong to, you’ll feel that you belong – to the world, to the cosmos. In this state you are accepted, you can accept, and you can create, contribute, and receive. It’s very empowering; it feels magical.

Munay can also be understood at three specific levels of consciousness, each of which is the portal for a different level of knowing, relating, and creating. Taken all together, these three levels inspire nothing less than thriving. The Organizing Principles of Consciousness

About Munay / page 4 • At the highest level of consciousness, munay is the pure expression of unconditional love. Notice the active statement – none of this is passive – once you are organized by the principle you are living it; munay organizes your wisdom, your relationships, and your creative genius in a context of unconditional love. And remember: this is technical, not subjective! • Munay at the next level is understood to be all the guiding principles of connecting. The elders in the Andes will ask you, ‘What brings you to friendship?’ They are asking you to name your guiding principles. In western cultures we seek sameness – we look for similarities and dismiss differences. If you recall our discussions of isolated linear awareness, you know that as modern people, we have a tendency to end up in a state where we’re essentially locked in the ‘2% closet’. In this state, we only have access to what has already occurred, and we have no way of experiencing what IS occurring in the now. Without direct sensory experience, we have no awareness of new knowledge. We only know the familiar, not the unfamiliar. So the only way we can consider relationship, especially with the unfamiliar, is to find something we already know that is LIKE that new thing. Our principle is to look for similarities - because that’s all we have in isolated linear awareness. In addition, the ego, without the support of relational intelligence, will push away the unknown, primarily out of fear. We need to consider that without munay, we are placed in isolation, and our world view becomes conditional – the condition being that we can’t accept anything unless it’s familiar. But this doesn’t erase the familiar feeling that there is something more for us, somewhere. Without munay we’re also left with the principle of the missing piece – we’re always seeking what is missing when we come to relationship. The outcome is that it’s a rare person who comes whole to himself or to a relationship, and in asking for the missing piece we miss what the relationship can really provide. The outcome is that we’re always looking for more and are often unable to recognize what is already present. This world we live in is comprised of complementarities – of opposites joining forces to create a third thing. There are resonances that exist between complementary opposites – resonances that are required for anything, even the simplest molecular bond, to form. In linear awareness, these resonances actually appear dissonant, if only because they’re unfamiliar and we’re in a limited state which doesn’t allow us to be informed via direct experience. As a result, we tend to lump all dissonance into one category and push it away, thereby missing half the world. It’s a very hard state in which to create anything, let alone abundance.

The Organizing Principles of Consciousness

About Munay / page 5 What we are saying is vital: munay as an organizing principle places us in a state of consciousness which, by its nature, is inclusive, unconditional, and creative. It’s a state of natural relational creativity, membership, and collective action that supports the individual and the collective simultaneously. We have to consider this in the light of what our modern culture has been producing via competing to eliminate the opposition, creating exclusivity in order to increase value, leaving many people and cultural groups outside of membership. These are not expressions of munay. • At the third key level of consciousness, munay is comprised of the literal ways in which we are connected. The Andean elders call it our network of affection. They will ask you, ‘What is your network of affection?’ If you answer, ‘Facebook’ they’ll look at you with sad eyes and wonder about your heart, and your lack of connection with the living world as it is unfolding – with the everevolving mountains and rivers and ancestors, with all living beings, face-to-face in all of their dimensions. This is really a conversation with power – the power that creates, fuels, and stewards well-being for all living forms and and the systems they are part of. Humans have always known that everything is alive, everything is energy and has life force. When we organize our awareness by pacha, munay, and all the other principles, we are entering a conversation with the highest power of creative intelligence – Consciousness with a capital C, or as Max Planck said it, the intelligence that moves the forces that keep the electrons in their orbits around their nucleii. This intelligence speaks in everything – visible and invisible, tangible and intangible – and the organizing principles of this intelligence give us the highest technology of all for taking the innovative, evolutionary steps we need to take to rebalance our world and grow with it, in right relationship, right action and full abundance. Dimensions of inovation The three levels of munay correspond to three levels of dimensional innovation. At the highest level we have the source, and this technology tells us that unconditional acceptance and love is a source power. The next level gives us the ingredients – all of the elements that combine with the source power to produce a multi-dimensional, beneficial outcome. The third level is the literal outcome, and in this technology it is an outcome of multiplicities – many levels of beneficial results, each of which has the momentum to create and carry further benefit beyond what can be planned at the outset. Think of what rises at this third level as a fountain not a linear result.

The Organizing Principles of Consciousness

About Munay / page 6 knowledge – we know the precise membership, principles of connecting, and literal framework of connection that comprises everything. Can you imagine that with this flow of knowledge it’s easy and natural to be flexible and adaptive in the face of change, no matter the pace of that change? And since we are talking about full consciousness, we are also talking about a living in a state informed by relational intelligence which simply does not experience overwhelm and is totally at ease walking into the unknown all the time. It is not run by fear or doubt or causal limitation. We have spoken of munay at three levels, two of which center on framework and connectivity. It is important to know the third element at work when we embody this principle – fluidity. The characteristics of a conscious network of connection are: • Framework • Fluidity • Connectivity • Framework is comprised of the coordinates describing your current location on your life journey, from the standpoint of your unfolding consciousness. The indigenous understanding is that power sources need to be informing you on your journey, not your ego, and you need to know where you are relative to power and resource. • Fluidity, as Don Manuel taught it, is your degree of passion and compassion. Modern people are just beginning to realize this, yet so often can only talk about it. Remember, we are learning full consciousness – these states of being must be lived in order to understand the underlying technology and benefit from it. Being organized by munay brings us, technically, to the experience of our passion and compassion. • Connectivity is defined as the power sources you are literally connected to. Note again that none of this is personal, meaning it is not of the ego. The ego is definitely a recipient of the benefits of consciousness; it is not the arbiter or the owner. Consider your life visions in terms of framework, fluidity, connectivity – these are your tools for calling in everything you need to manifest a vision. Without these tools, as one of my students said, ‘If all we do is look ahead to vision and try to source the vision itself, we’ll end up eating it, devouring it, and nothing will happen, except that we’ll get discouraged!’

The Organizing Principles of Consciousness

About Munay / page 7 connectivities to bring in power and literal resources to create your vision here, in this pacha – to make it real – whether you are actualizing yourself or a project or a relationship or a collective dream. The next time you set out to network, or tend to your social media campaigns, review this material first. Let this knowledge inform you and track the amazing outcomes you manifest. Experiencing munay Organizing your awareness by the principle of munay is very simple. First of all, organize your awareness by pacha. Refer to the notes for our first session for the full instructions. The process of shifting the energy of your awareness to your energy architecture and then out into the world immediately brings your awareness alive here and now, in full relationship with the world around you. This is the world in which you have membership. Experience the fact that you are in a state of consciousness not run by the personal, ego-based self. Experience the fact that you feel a sense of freedom, a release from emotional limitations. Again, this is not subjective. Shifting to full luminous awareness [organizing your awareness by the core principles] is a technical event. Your ego structure does grow strong from this work – remember this! – it needs that strength to release itself from the ‘driver’s seat and allow your higher intelligence to lead the way. Once you are organized by pacha, allow your awareness to bring in the whole environment around you – be aware of everything as it is. Remember to keep your mind free of language. Language is a linear activity, and its presence indicates that you have slipped back into linear awareness. Full awareness of everything as it is – being organized by munay – is a beautiful experience. Notice the feeling of acceptance that arises; it’s an open, loving feeling. Imagine a world organized this way! You may have already experienced munay while you were engaging the basic practices for pacha. This is because all the organizing principles function simultaneously. Organize your awareness by munay often and experience your love. Stay with the practice until you can distinguish personal love [which is, by it’s wondrous nature, quite conditional] from universal love [which does not operate via attachments, judgments, or conditionality].
