Game Notes FIRST PITCH Gettysburg plays its season finale this afternoon as it takes on the Messiah College Falcons in a single nine-inning game. The two sides are meeting for the second time this season. ALL-TIME SERIES The Bullets and Falcons are tied at 11-11 in the all-time series that started in 1968. Gettysburg won the first eight meetings but Messiah has captured 11 of the last 13, dating back to 1987. LAST TIME OUT Gettysburg nearly pulled off an incredible comeback, scoring six times in the bottom of the ninth in a 10-9 loss to Juniata here at Kirchhoff Field yesterday. The Bullets had the tying run on first base but Juniata induced a pop-out to end the game after Gettysburg sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. The Bullets collected 13 hits for the game, with senior Chuck Probst, freshman Sean Murphy, and freshman Kobi Wolf leading the way with two hits apiece. Sophomore Ryan Augustus added a hree-run homer and four RBIs. LAST MEETING VERSUS MESSIAH The Falcons claimed a 9-0 decision when the two sides met earlier this year on a frigid afternoon in Grantham back on March 8. Six Messiah pitchers combined on a three-hitter, with reliever Ben Stewart picking up the win after tossing two innings of no-hit ball. Junior Will Wortmann took the loss for the Bullets while throwing 5 1/3 innings. However, just two of his six runs allowed were earned.
Green Terror over the last five innings. In his previous start, the senior southpaw spun a four-hitter in the Bullets’ 3-1 victory at Swarthmore, which went on to finish in first place in the conference regular season. GIOVINCO’S BIG WEEK Sophomore shortstop Joe Giovinco is coming off a big week at the plate, batting .625 (10-for-16) with six RBIs over four games. He opened with a 5-for5 performance at McDaniel in which he tied the school record for hits in a game. Then in a 6-4 victory at Haverford, he smacked a go-ahead threerun homer in the top of the seventh and finished the game with four RBIs. Giovinco closed out the week by going 2-for-3 in the nightcap versus the Fords, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. He also made just one error in 21 chances for the week. SCOUTING THE FALCONS Messiah won four of its last five games, including a three-game sweep of Albright in its final MAC Commonwealth Conference series this past weekend. Junior Josh Hayner leads the Falcons at the plate, batting .406, while sophomore Ryan Hentschel has hit .393. Senior Quinton Kuntz has led the Falcons on the mound, going 4-4 with a 2.76 ERA and 54 strikeouts over 49 innings. Junior Jordan Nichols leads the team with 57 strikeouts over 49 2/3 innings.
GOING THE DISTANCE For the second straight start, senior Brad DeMartino fired a complete game when he tossed an eight-hitter in Gettysburg’s 4-2 victory over McDaniel this past Friday here at Kirchhoff Field. He struck out three, walked none and blanked the
