Buresh Two Away From All-Time Sack Record
Senior defensive end Cody Buresh (Holland, MI/Hamilton) picked up a pair of sacks Saturday versus Oberlin to move into second place on the Wabash career list. Buresh started the day tied for fourth place with Bill Wheeler ‘83 and Mike Worthington ‘86 all-time sack list with 27. Buresh’s second sack moved him past current Wabash defensive coordinator BJ Hammer ‘01 and his brother, Blair Hammer ‘04, who were tied for second with 27-1/2 sacks. Darryl Kennon ‘09 holds the record with 30, including 26 solo sacks.
Buresh ranks fifth in career tackles for losses with 57-1/2 after recording three for a total of 11 yards last week. He moved past Kennon place and into a tie for third with Jared Lange ‘09. BJ Hammer sits in second with 58. Adrian Pynenberg ‘08 is the all-time leader with 73-1/2 tackles for losses.
Tutsie Sets One Record, Eyes Another
Sophomore kicker Andrew Tutsie (Indianapolis, IN/Decatur Central) broke one Wabash extra point record Saturday and has drawn closer to setting a new mark in another.
Tutsie converted all 10 point-after-touchdown kicks Saturday to break the previous mark of nine. Tutsie had tied that record earlier this season when he connected on nine PATs versus Allegheny College. The previous mark of nine was shared by current offensive line coach Olmy Olmstead ‘04 and current Purdue University fifth-year senior kicker Ian MacDougal ‘14. Olmstead set the record against Denison in 2000 then matched it with nine versus Hiram in 2003. MacDougall kicked nine extra points against Hanover in 2013. Tutsie has made all 45 of his PATs this season and converted three last year, giving him a streak of 48 consecutive successful extra-point kicks. The Wabash record is 53 set by Frank Kolisek ‘82 from 1980 to 1981.
Dynamic Duo
Wabash quarterbacks Michael Putko (JR/Glendale, AZ/Cactus) and Connor Rice (SO/Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) were nearly perfect while sharing time on offense last Saturday versus Oberlin.
Putko completed 11-of-12 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Rice finished 5-of-6 for 96 with a 41-yard TD toss to Houston Hodges (SR/WR/Plymouth, IN/Plymouth). Rice also ran for two scores on plays of 47 and 8 yards. Rice and Putko lead the NCAC in passing efficiency through seven games. Rice has completed 16-of-23 passes for 285 yards and two TDs without an interception for an efficiency rating of 202.3. Putko ranks second with a rating of 181.2 by completing 86-of130 passes for 1,160 yards and 17 TDs with two interceptions.
Making special Plays
Wabash backup linebacker AJ Clark (JR/Higley, AZ/Apollo) led the Little Giant defense Saturday by making seven total tackles against Oberlin, setting a new personal single-game best. His previous top mark came with five tackles versus Hanover last season.
Clark is tied for the team lead in special teams tackles with 12, joined by Connor Karns (JR/OLB/Noblesville, IN/Noblesville). All of Karns 12 special team tackles have come on kickoff coverage. Clark has 10 kick coverage tackles and two punt return tackles this season.
Hiram College Quick Facts
Coach Raeburn’s Comments
“I was happy with how we played Saturday versus Oberlin. I thought we were dialed in with all three phases of the game, particularly from an offensive standpoint. At this point of the season you should have the basics covered, so now you have to concentrate on the little things. In a game like we had Saturday where we did execute pretty well for the most part, when we watch the film with the players we try to be extra-critical. When we play well as a team you have to find those little things you need focus on and get corrected that can make a difference in a really close game.” On Hiram: “We caught Hiram at the right time last year when we beat them. That was a huge advantage — they had a ton of injuries toward the end of the season, particularly at quarterback. This year Hiram is a much better football team. Their starting quarterback has stayed healthy and he’s having a really good season. He has tremendous weapons at the skill positions to work with. They are dynamic at receiver with really athletic players. They are a real challenge for us defensively. They lead the conference in interceptions and are tied for second in takeaways. They constantly try to strip the football after first contact. They have a bunch of strips on receivers. You might get a good play against them, but if you don’t hang on to the football, they’ll find a way to strip it and turn the momentum.”
Hiram Preview
The Terriers have already produced one of their best seasons in recent history and still have three games to add to their win total. Hiram picked up a 35-28 win at Ohio Wesleyan Saturday to move to 4-3, matching the four-win total last reached in 1995. Part of the improvement has come thanks to the health of second-year starting quarterback Robert Partridge (SR/6-2/205/Massillon, OH/Massillon-Washington). Last year he played in only three games before suffering a season-ending injury. This season Partridge leads the NCAC in passing yards (1,893; 270.4 ypg) and has thrown for 13 touchdowns. He completed 22-of-35 passes against Ohio Wesleyan for 308 yards and three TDs and also rushed for 42 yards on eight carries. Nate Eaton (JR/5-9/160/South Euclid, OH/Walnut Ridge) is one Partridge’s favorite targets at wide receiver. Eaton leads the team with 34 catches for 428 yards and two TDs. Jaylen Dinar (JR/58/142/Tampa, FL/Paul R. Wharton) has 29 receptions for 372 yards and one score. Britton Lewis (JR/6-2/177/Tampa, FL/Paul R. Wharton) has converted three of his 18 receptions into scores, while Josh Philander (SO/6-1/170/Fort Myers, FL/South Fort Myers) has scored four TDs out of 17 receptions. Brendon Carr (FR/5-11/231/Wellsville, OH/Wellsville) is slated to start this weekend at running back. He’s rushed for 134 yards and four TDs in 49 attempts. Danny Robinson (FR/5-8/170/Labelle, FL/Labelle) tops the rushing charts for the Terriers with 394 yards and one TD in 43 tries, but has missed two games this year.
Hiram has created 22 turnovers this year, tied for second-best among NCAC schools. The Terriers lead the league with 13 interceptions. D.D. Fleetion (JR/5-10/187/Youngstown, OH/East) leads the team with three interceptions this year. He earned NCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after making 10 tackles and recovering a fumble in the win over OWU.
