Defense Shuts Down High-Powered Denison Offense Wabash held Denison to 11 first downs –– including one in the second half –– and one touchdown in a 28-7 victory to keep the Little Giants undefeated in 2017.

Wabash limited the Big Red to 49 yards of total offense in the second half and held junior quarterback Canaan Gebele to his second-lowest career passing total of 103 yards. Denison managed just 254 yards of total offense, well below its season average of 56.2.5, which ranked third among Division III teams entering the game. Evan Hansen (JR/LB/Carmel, IN/ Guerin Catholic) shared team-high tackle honors with Satchel Burton (SR/ DB/Tucson, AZ/Flowing Wells) with seven apiece. Burton forced a fumble on Denison's opening drive which Hansen recovered, leading to the first of three rushing touchdowns for sophomore Ike James (RB/Lowell, IN/ Lowell). Burton later tipped a Gebele pass to Hansen for an interception to thwart another Denison drive. Hansen also recorded the only sack of the game. Wabash ran for 264 yards and four touchdowns against the Big Red, led by James with 158 yards on 22 carries. Weston Murphy (SO/QB/Gilbert, AZ/ Williams Field) added a two-yard touchdown run for the Little Giants.

James Repeats as NCAC Offensive Player of the Week Ike James received the North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Football Player of the Week Award for the second time this season after his performance in the Little Giants' win over Denison. James won the award previously with a 238-yard, three-touchdown performance versus Albion in the season opener.

James rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries against Denison Satuday in the Little Giants' 28-7 victory. His totals included a career-long 67 run on a third-down-and-two-yards play in the fourth quarter that culminated in a fourth touchdown for Wabash. James currently leads the NCAC in rushing with an average of 147.6 yards per game, 10th-best among Division III players. His 10 rushing touchdowns rank ninth in DIII and also leads the conference.

Ohio Wesleyan University Quick Facts

Coach Morel’s Comments

“Saturday we had three thing on defense: one, tremendous effort. Two, perfect assignments. Three, we had a couple of veteran guys that had been out with injuries who returned. We made plays and really looked like the defense that we want at Wabash. Now we want to build off that. Certainly we are capable, if we are completely locked in mentally, to be a great defensive team. And it takes all 11 guys. We don't have one guy who can do it by himself. All 11 have to play great and we've got a chance to be good.” On the depth of the Wabash receiving corps: "We're built to try and hog the ball. Getting extra possessions with turnovers and not giving up a possession with a turnover are critical. We're also a better team playing from ahead rather than from behind. We've been able to win a couple of games when we've fallen behind, but we're built to play with a lead, hang on to the football, and chew up the clock. That's a recipe for success." On Ohio Wesleyan: “Offensively Ohio Wesleyan has nothing to lose. We have to be readi for a consistent offense that is capable of putting up points using the running game and the passing game. Defensively they will take chances to get turnovers. We can't fall into that trap. We have to focus on playing our game."

Ohio Wesleyan Preview

The Battling Bishops opened the season with a pair of loss, but came within a point of capturing wins it their last three games. A 31-30 loss to DePauw was surrounded by a 37-21 win against Allegheny. Last week Ohio Wesleyan drove the ball 85 yards in 11 plays in the final eight minutes of its game at Kenyon to capture a 23-21 win. OWU averages 25 points and 352 yards of total offense per game. Senior quarterback Brian Berry (6-1/205/Parma, OH/Valley Forge) has thrown for 1,272 yards (254.4 ypg) and 12 touchdowns through the first half of the season. Hunter Baker (SR/WR/6-2/190/Chagrin Falls, OH/ St. Ignatius) leads the team with 30 receptions for 470 yards and five TDs. Mher Tcholakian (SR/WR/6-0/190/Farmington Hills, MI/North Farmington) has caught 17 passes for 297 yards and four TDs, while his younger brother, Sasoun Tcholakian (SR/WR/6-0/190/Farmington, MI/ North Farmington), is fourth on the team with 14 receptions for 148 yards. Deji Adebiyi (JR/WR/6-4/205/Canton, MI/Plymouth) has caught 17 passes for 108 yards and one score.
