WWCB Code of Conduct January 2016 V1

WALT WHITMAN CREW BOOSTERS, INC. CODE OF CONDUCT Rowing for Walt Whitman Crew Boosters, Inc. (“WWCB”) is both a privilege and a responsibility. Rowers are representatives of their school, team, and the community. When a student accepts the privilege, he/she must live up to a code of conduct beyond that of the general high school student. As a prerequisite for participation in the Walt Whitman Crew program (the "Activity"), rowers and parents are expected to sign a statement that commits the rower to follow the established training rules and abide by the Rower’s Code of Conduct. The WWCB is a club sport and athletes will represent Walt Whitman High School (“WWHS”) and WWCB at all times. Rowers are expected to follow the athletic code of conduct, guidelines, and any other rules and policies established by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) regardless of where such function or activity held. TEAM RULES Rowers are required to comply with the established team rules, procedures, and instructions of the coach. Rowers are required to display good citizenship and sportsmanship in connection with their participation on the team. Coaches have the authority to suspend a rower for failure to comply with rules and procedures, for displaying poor citizenship or sportsmanship, or when the rower’s safety or the safety of others requires such actions. When disciplinary action is warranted (suspension or removal) the coach, in consultation with the board, determines the appropriate action. Permanent removal from the team may occur only after the Coach’s consultation with the WWCB Board. I agree and confirm, as part of my responsibility in respect of WWCB for my own safety and the safety of others, that I will examine and inspect in advance each aspect in which I take part and that, if I observe any condition which I consider to be unacceptably hazardous or dangerous I will notify a coach immediately. In connection with any trip associated with the Activity, I understand that my failure to comply with all proper instructions and rules of behavior imposed by coaches and other adult leaders accompanying me on the trip may result in my being dismissed from the trip, with any return travel expenses or other costs that are thereby occasioned to be paid by me. In connection with the Activity, I agree to comply with all laws, rules and regulations that are applicable to me. I understand that I am responsible for the consequences of any failure on my part to do so, including, without limitation, costs of legal defense and fines and penalties imposed by public authorities.

I agree to comply with the rules and instructions of any carriers on which I travel and of any hotels or other lodging facilities at which my lodging may be provided in connection with Activity trips. MANDATORY PRACTICE and REGATTA PARTICIPATION Plan your schedule around crew practice times. Contact your coach as soon as you know you will need to immediately (and in advance) if you will miss practice. Unknown absences will delay the start of practice. Excused absences include family emergency, illness, religious holiday or school commitment. Athletes may not attend practice on days they have missed school. If you will be unavailable to participate in a regatta, FOR ANY REASON, you must inform you coach immediately. Not attending regattas can negatively impact the team’s ability to participate in a race and may lead to disqualification for the team. SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY The use and/or possession of alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, and dangerous weapons are prohibited during any WWCB related function or activity, regardless where such function or activity is held. In addition, the use of performance enhancing drugs is prohibited as defined by US Rowing. Substance abuse runs completely contrary to both the well being of our athletes and the spirit of the sport, and parents are encouraged to communicate concerns of these types to the coaches in the hope of finding a positive solution to help the athlete overcome such problems. Coaches are the primary enforcers of this team policy and are responsible for addressing violations directly with the athletes. The coaches have discretion in determining the consequences that violators will face. In case of repeat offenses or disregarding a coach’s instructions, the coach and the parent have a responsibility to bring the offender to the attention of the board. The board will review such cases, and may require an athlete to participate in a rehabilitation program or be temporarily or permanently suspended from the team, depending on the gravity of the offense.

PROCEDURES If a rower is reported to have violated any provision of this Code of Conduct or the Rowers Code of Conduct & Travel Rules, the following procedures will be implemented: 1. The rower’s parents/guardians will be notified. 2. A meeting may occur with the rower, rower’s parents/guardian and a member(s) of the coaching staff will take place to discuss the violation. A member or members of the board will attend the meeting in an as needed basis. 3. If a rower is found to have violated any provision of this Code of Conduct, the Coach, Head Coach and in consultation with WWCB Board reserves the right to suspend the rower from the team for a period of time that is commensurate with the nature and extent of the violation, and to prohibit the rower from participating in the next scheduled regatta.
