Unemployment in West Devon Unemployment in West Devon is generally low, and is consistently much lower than the rest of the South West. Over the past three years, unemployment in the Borough has been around half the rate of the rest of Great Britain. However as of October 2009, there has been a significant rise, which is to be expected given the current global economic situation. One of the ways of measuring unemployment involves the number of people of working age claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA). The percentage figures below express the number of claimants in an area as a percentage of the working age population resident in that area. Working age is defined as 16-64 for males and 1659 for females. Not all those who are unemployed claim JSA so it is difficult to ascertain the true level of unemployment.

Housing in West Devon Housing affordability is a major issue in West Devon with home ownership now beyond the reach of all but a small minority of first time buyers. The need for affordable housing has increased as prices have risen and income has failed to keep pace. Despite a recent fall in house prices, affordability and access to the market is restricted by unemployment, stricter lending criteria and a requirement for higher deposits. Income required to purchase average property

The table below shows average purchase prices and lower quartile averages for all wards in West Devon. The table also shows the income required to buy a lower quartile property (based on a 90% mortgage and 3.5 x income) and ratio of median income to lower quartile (LQ) prices.

Planning in West Devon Much of the development in the Borough is facilitated by the planning process for which West Devon Borough Council is the local planning authority. The planning statistics below are based upon planning applications that have been determined from April 10– March 11 The figures relate to all types of applications and are broken down by ward. It should be noted that the figures exclude agricultural prior notifications, County matters and applications within Dartmoor National Park (DNP) as these are not classed as planning applications to be determined by the West Devon Borough Planning Authority. The statistics provide figures relating to the total number of applications received within each ward and the numbers of applications granted consent, those refused consent or those receiving a split decision. There is also a comparison of each ward against the Borough averages relating to the above categories.

Results from Consultation with West Devon residents A Government survey was conducted in Autumn 2008 to find out what you think of living in your local area and the services we and other organisations such as the County Council, the Police and the Health Service provide. 3000 questionnaires were sent out to a random sample of people across the Borough and just under 50% returned. 38 people in Thrushel completed the questionnaire. Respondents were asked to choose up to 5 quality of life areas they felt were most important in making somewhere a good place to live and 5 that most needed improving.

On the following pages are a sample of the responses to some of the key questions in the survey.
