NEWPORT NEWS WARRIORS WRESTLING A WINNING TRADITION!

What is Warriors Wrestling? The Newport News Warriors Wrestling Program is about real wrestling – the world’s oldest and greatest sport - not the acting you see on television. It permits boys and girls of any size and weight to compete for personal pride and glory, where success is not necessarily determined by ones natural athletic ability, but by the size of a Warrior’s heart. Wrestling teaches the value of hard work, discipline, commitment, and perseverance qualities that will serve them well in life as well as all other sports. Some of our nation’s greatest leaders competed in wrestling as young men Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, George Patton, Norman Schwarzkopf, and Donald Rumsfeld to name a few. In addition, a recent study by the NCAA revealed that wrestlers on average were considered to be the least injured athletes, carried the highest overall grade point average of student athletes, and the best overall athletes due to their superior conditioning. Character, Discipline and Commitment are what Warriors Wrestling is all about! The Warriors Youth Wrestling program is open to all boys and girls ages 5-14 y/o (Must turn 5 in the next year to compete). All practices days and times are determined by the athlete’s age and/or skill level. Practices are directed and monitored by a corps of dedicated and experienced USA Wrestling and AAU Certified coaches who show an aptitude and ability for developing young athletes. The program allows wrestlers to compete in the Peninsula Youth Wrestling League, team dual matches, and tournaments. Athletes compete in weight classes and divisions based on age. Weight loss is strongly discouraged. Regardless of your wrestler’s age, weight, or skill level, we guarantee they will gain valuable experience and become a better wrestler, gain selfconfidence, and have fun in the process.

NEWPORT NEWS WARRIORS WRESTLING MISSION STATEMENT: “WHERE WARRIORS ARE TRAINED AND CHAMPIONS ARE MADE.” WARRIORS WRESTLING CREED: “WE ARE THE WARRIORS! WE WILL HAVE FUN! I will ALWAYS represent the Warriors with dignity and pride. I will not be out worked or out hustled. I will hold my head high, win or lose. I will support my teammates and pat them on the back after every match. I will lead by example. I will ALWAYS congratulate my opponents, win or lose. I will get a little better each and every time I step on the mat. I will push my teammates to get better and expect them to push me to get better. I will remember that winning is a result of the effort I put into practice. WE ARE THE WARRIORS! I AM A WARRIOR” WARRIORS CORE VALUES: DESIRE ~ DISCIPLINE DEDICATION ~ DETERMINATION

Beginning in 2012, the Newport News Warriors Wrestling Program has established and continues to maintain a winning tradition. In our inaugural season, we won 80.6% of our matches and won the PYWL Team Championship & 2013 Spartan Wrestling Championship. Then came the 2014 SOVA Team Championship & the 2015 VA AAU Elementary and Middle School Team State Championship! Under the leadership of our coaches, the young warriors who have donned the Newport News Warriors colors have set a high standard of achievement and excellence for the next generation of Warrior wrestlers. Coach Chevis Smith was honored as the 2013 Peninsula Youth Wrestling League Coach of the Year! Our coaches have established themselves as some of the premier coaches in the Commonwealth and many of our wrestlers have been extremely successful at the local, state, and national levels. So just how good is the Newport News Warriors Wrestling program? Aside from our extremely successful first year, we have to talk about practice. Intensity is what drives us and keeps us successful. We have an open door policy and often receive visitors to practice. When the best of the best from other wrestling clubs come by to practice with our coaches, then you know you’re dealing with a quality program!
