Water Conservation Office Fall Update

The City of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office offers a variety of programs to reach many different water users and customers within the City.

Fall Programs and Events 15th Annual Children's Water Fiesta: September 27-28, 2016 Santa Fe Public Schools 4th grade students came for a fun-filled day of learning about water at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center! Fiesta activities covered a wide range of core curriculum areas including language arts, math, science, social studies, visual arts, and health & wellness. Presenters demonstrated water related facts, concepts and values through fun, hands-on learning activities. 2016 Water Fiesta Results: • 652 students from the Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) system attended. • Schools attending: Carlos Gilbert (2 classes), Amy Biehl (4 classes), Aspen Community Magnet School (3 classes), Eldorado Community School (3 classes), Nina Otero Community School (3 classes), Chaparral Elementary (3 classes), Pinon Elementary (3 classes), Atalaya (2 classes), Kearny (3 classes), Ramirez Thomas (2 Classes) • 23 organizations participated; including volunteers • 17 activities were presented each day

Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL) Training QWEL is a certification program developed to educate landscape professionals and their customers on the benefits of sound landscape design, management and irrigation practices. QWEL is an EPA WaterSense recognized training program that is offered across the nation and is available for use by utilities interested in having a locally focused landscape training program. 2016 Water Conservation Office Fall Update

The QWEL training will now be offered through the Santa Fe Community College with the first offering in spring 2016. Participants will now be able to also receive CEU's toward their Journeyman Plumber certification.

Santa Fe Water Conservation Committee The SFWCC has three new committee members; Aaron Kauffman, Justin Lyon and Robert Coombe. The SFWCC has been a tremendous resource for the program and the work is in complete alignment with the goals of the office at this time. The committee has broken into four subcommittee groups; 1. Education Subcommittee - Working on a comprehensive education program being offered to 4th grade students that will incorporate work from many different city departments including, Keep Santa Fe Beautiful, Buckman Direct Diversion, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Sustainable Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed Education Program. The idea is to help kids understand the value of water (where it comes from, how it's treated, where wastewater goes and how it's treated/recycled). Conserving water will be a natural next step in this program. 2. Scorecard Subcommittee -A scorecard is being developed for the Water Conservation Program that is aligned with the Water Division's overall goals. The scorecard will be updated on an annual calendar basis and can be published along with the GPCD analysis. 3. Irrigation Rebate and QWEL training Subcommittee- Changes are currently being made to our Irrigation rebate and the expansion of our QWEL training. 4. Water Conservation Codes, Ordinances and Regulations -This subcommittee tracks regulation directly related to the Water Conservation Program as well as proposes new regulations relative to water conservation.

Rebate Program Changes Earlier this year the Water Conservation Program proposed changes to the rebate values for several device types based on their water savings potential and the availability of newer, more efficient technologies. In addition, Federal standards for some devices, such as clothes washers, had changed in 2015 resulting in a reduced number of qualifying rebate applications and a sharp decline in the water savings resulting from the rebate program. The new program has had great participation and the data to date is shown below. Device Type
