Wrap Up Day - A Few More Ideas!
Batik Background by Jennifer Rzasa Card size: 44" x 52"
Watercolor Batik Technique 1. Melt a small portion of paraffin wax in a wax warmer or other electric heat element which will keep the wax warm while you work. 2. Tape Hosho paper to heat resistant surface. Here, Jennifer used a large ceramic tile. 3. Stamp flower image in VersaFine Onyc Black ink on Hosho paper. 4. Determine areas you would like to be the lightest and carefully apply melted wax. 5. Determine the next lightest areas and paint them a pale pink. Allow to dry. 6. Cover areas from Step 5 with wax. 7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until image and background is painted and covered in wax. 8. Optional: For a “droplet look”, sprinkle on bits of wax before painting. 9. Optional: Cover entire image in wax and allow to dry completely. Once cooled and cry, bend the paper until the wax cracks. Apply paint over the cracks and allow to dry. 10. Use a clothing iron to remove the layers of wax by placing a piece of white paper over the painting and then applying heat. The wax transfers to the white paper.

cool very fast. • Do not use a heat tool to speed the drying process
as it will melt the applied wax.

Reactivating Watercolor by Jennifer McGuire Card sizes: 52" x 44"
Instructions 1. Tape a piece of watercolor paper to a hard, smooth surface to keep it flat. 2. Apply four stripes of Peerless watercolor to cover a large are of the watercolor paper, overlapping slightly to help with blending. When applying the watercolor, only use a small amount of water so that the color stays very intense. 3. Let watercolor dry completely. 4. Trace the inside of a rectangle postage die onto the watercolor area. This will be a guide for centering stamped images. 5. Apply anti-static powder tool to the watercolored area. 6. Stamp a sentiment with VersaMark Ink and white heat emboss. 7. Above the sentiment, stamp a large flower with VersaMark Ink and white heat emboss. 8. Stamp a small flower with VersaMark Ink on both sides of the large flower, allowing the stamping to overlap. Add white embossing powder. Use a dry, fine-tip brush to brush away any powder that overlaps with the large flower image. (This is a quick way to get the effect of masking). Heat to emboss. 9. Repeat Step 8 with leaves. 10. Use a fine brush to paint water inside the flowers and the leaves. Before the water starts to dry, dab it away with a dry paper towel. This will remove some of the color. Repeat 2 to 3 times. 11. Let dry.

Tips and Tricks • This technique works well with many watercolors,
but not all. To test out your watercolor medium of choice, simply apply a dark layer of watercolor on watercolor paper and let it dry. Put a drop of water on it and dab it with a dry cloth. If the water removed some of the color (leaving a lighter spot), then this technique works with that particular watercolor medium. • Peerless watercolor and Distress Inks are great
choices for this technique. • Each time you add a layer of water to the dried
watercolor background and dab the water away, it removes a bit of color. The more times you repeat this, the lighter it gets!
