here are plenty of renovations where old meets new, retaining the original front of a house and adding a sleek contemporary living zone at the rear. For many, it’s about wanting the contemporary look and technology you can get only with a new build, while retaining some of the pretty historical features – or it might be because the house is heritage protected and can’t be demolished. When renovating this polychrome Victorian house some 10 years ago, the vendors went a little further than the average homeowner. They decided to do whatever it took to retain the look of the house, even if that meant hand-cutting the bluestone paving and tuck-pointing the bricks. The result is something the vendor says she’s immensely proud of and believes truly captures the spirit of the area. The house, named Alloa, is one of many Victorian and Edwardian residences along Bayview Terrace. It’s a fine example of the first wave of suburban development in Ascot Vale in the late 19th century. The vendor likes to call it “the lady”, saying she has always respected the house and now hopes someone else can inject their own life into the historic beauty. The first thing you notice is its position. Taking up a large block on the corner of Bayview Terrace and St Leonards Road, it has no neighbours on one side. There’s a laneway at the back of the property. No matter where you look, the exterior fits in with the original style, right down to the double garage with loft above at the rear. It has intricately detailed brickwork to resemble the features of the original house, and there’s a pretty water feature next to it. Back to the main entrance, where a manicured garden and a covered porch lead to the front door. Step inside onto original floorboards and find four bedrooms (one used as a dining room) off the central hall. All have their original fireplaces and two have built-in wardrobes. The modern bathroom at the end of the hall has double sinks and a freestanding bath and the laundry is well-equipped. At the back of the house is a renovated kitchen and living area, but the real surprises lie in the backyard. There are three levels of entertainment areas; the first is a covered courtyard with ceiling fans and a footbridge to the loft. Stairs lead down to the second area, which has decking and bluestone paving around a pool tucked back against the boundary wall. There’s a spa and space for a dining table. Down more stairs is another paved area with a water feature and the door to the garage. In the loft, there’s a large living area, bathroom and kitchenette. Stable doors add a period touch, while a surveillance camera and private phone line and intercom system meet modern demands. Storage under the house is the size of two bedrooms – perfect for a wine cellar, if you are a true connoisseur. There’s a tram line, train station and cafes and the Union Road shopping strip just metres away, not that you’d know it. The only thing you’ll hear while you’re relaxing on one of the three outdoor areas behind your high walls on this wide, treelined street are the birds chirping. ● Kirstie Bedford [email protected]

Windy Hill is still best known as the former home base of Essendon Football Club. But it also shows off wide, leafy streets and rows of Edwardian and Victorian houses. This pretty Edwardian has leadlight windows, high ceilings, open fireplaces and polished pine floorboards. On entry are a living room, three bedrooms, two with open fireplaces, and the main bedroom which has built-in wardrobes and an en suite with spa bath. The main bathroom separates the fourth bedroom and the kitchen, dining and living area, which opens to a large outdoor entertainment area, pool and spa. A clever renovation has added a studio at the back of the property. It has a kitchenette and bifold doors. ● Kirstie Bedford
