escribed in a 1935 newspaper article as “novelty in modern design”, this art deco house has such significant history it is on the Moonee Ponds Heritage Trail. Called Lyndoch and originally owned by a wholesale merchant, it is now a landmark known for its “ship architecture” – the rounding of the stair hall, ironwork and open balconies – which gives it a nautical effect. People drive from across Melbourne to study its timeless architecture. The vendors say that’s fine by them. “It’s one of a few very important historic houses in the area, so people are interested in coming to see it and we don’t mind that at all.” The house is on a large corner block on Levien Street, with 30 standard roses lining the side boundary with Lorraine Street. There are three ways to enter the property: by driving up to the double garage on Lorraine Street, by foot, or via the semicircular driveway on Levien Street – a fitting welcome to the lavish, marble floored entrance with sweeping staircase and feature lighting. All of the original features of this historic house have been kept, from chrome-plated balustrades to corner bow windows, detailing on doors and even art deco door handles. The house is filled with curves, steel, brass and chrome. To the right of the entrance is a study with an open fireplace. To the left is a formal dining and living room with dark polished floorboards. A curved mantel atop the fireplace in the dining room makes a bold statement in this ballroom-sized space. At the back of the ground floor is the open-plan kitchen and living room. There’s also a separate laundry with storage – in what was once the maid’s quarters, which are detailed in the original plans. The kitchen has soft-close drawers, a granite benchtop, island bench, and European appliances. While it has been modernised, it is an appropriate design for this bright, airy room. The rectangular living room has a gas fireplace and glass doors to a large courtyard and lawn. This outdoor space is big enough for a swing set and trampoline, but is nicely tucked away so it doesn’t impact on the street appeal of this historic beauty. There’s also a powder room and access to the double garage. Back at the entrance, the wide, sweeping marble staircase with brass balustrade leads up to four bedrooms. This single detail is, far and away, the house’s piece de resistance. It gives the feel of being on a luxury cruise ship – and is one of the key reasons the house is recognised for its ship-like architecture. The main bedroom has a wall of period-style wardrobes, matched in the en suite. There are three more large bedrooms, one with a study with curved windows curved, and the main bathroom has a spa bath. The six-metre long bedroom at the back of this floor was once the billard room and could easily be divided into two bedrooms. The house is walking distance to Penleigh, Lowther Hall, St Columba’s College, cafes and Essendon Station. But expect to be stopped in the street when you’re leaving this historic lady, which definitely makes quite the impression. ● KIRSTIE BEDFORD

Location is key to this house, which is close to Flemington Racecourse, the Maribyrnong River, Kensington station, the cafes and shops of Macaulay Road, and several parks and reserves. While just a 15-minute drive from the city, with views of the Melbourne Star observation wheel from the end of the street, this area has a suburban feel. Inside, there’s a living area with polished floorboards and a hallway to the laundry (with access to the garage) and powder room. The back of the lower level is an open-plan kitchen and dining area with doors to a courtyard and small lawn. The main bedroom is upstairs. It has an en suite and doors to a balcony. Two other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. ● KIRSTIE BEDFORD
