WEDNESDAY, 13 JULY 2016 CRIME STOPPERS JOINS FORCES WITH POLICE IN VICTORIA AND NEW SOUTH WALES TO LAUNCH CROSS-BORDER ICE CAMPAIGN Crime Stoppers is joining forces with police in Wodonga and Albury to launch a two-week intensive crackdown campaign that will target manufacturers, dealers and traffickers of ice and other illicit drugs. The crime-fighting charity is today (Wednesday, 13 July) launching a collaborative cross-border Dob in a Dealer campaign that will run in both cities. Albury and Wodonga residents are urged to report what they know relating to the manufacture, supply and trafficking of illicit drugs, in particular methylamphetamine (ice), confidentially to Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers Australia board member and CEO of Crime Stoppers Victoria, Sam Hunter, said: “Too many of us know someone affected by ice and other illicit drugs, and the devastating impact the substances continue to have on individuals, families and the wider community. “We must all work together to rid our communities of these dangerous substances and through Dob in a Dealer we hope to empower every member of the community, across Australia, to play a part in reducing the manufacture and supply of illicit drugs in their neighbourhoods by reporting what they know to Crime Stoppers. “Information from the community leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime. Arrests are made and warrants are executed as a result of reports to Crime Stoppers. “Help us to stop the manufacture, stop the distribution, stop the supply. “We urge residents across Wodonga and Albury, and indeed across Australia, to pick up the phone and call Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestoppers.com.au anything you know about the manufacture, supply and dealing of illicit drugs in your neighbourhood. “Any information Crime Stoppers receives is handled in utmost confidence. You do not have to give your name or any personal details. There is no caller ID or IP tracing.”

WEDNESDAY, 13 JULY 2016 Crime Stoppers’ Dob in a Dealer program was first trialled in Victoria in 2014 contributing to an average 168 per cent increase in Information Reports to Crime Stoppers in locations where the campaign was held. Following a $1million funding grant by the Australian Government it is now being rolled out across Australia to aid in the detection and disruption of illicit drugs being supplied across the nation. In total more than 75 campaigns will be delivered nation-wide, including 17 in Victoria and 21 in New South Wales. Wodonga Acting Local Area Commander, Acting Inspector Kathryn Chamberlain, said: “The issues that stem from the manufacture and supply of illicit drugs can cross geographical boundaries. The devastating impacts of drugs don’t discriminate by location, age or gender. “We need a whole of community approach to tackle the flow of these harmful substances in to our neighbourhoods and Dob in a Dealer provides the community with a way to contribute to this fight. “Police need the information that many within the community hold about drug manufacture and dealing in their area. No matter how small or insignificant you may think that information is, every piece helps.” Dob in a Dealer was held previously in Wodonga in March last year contributing to a 133 per cent increase in Information Reports to Crime Stoppers during the two-week campaign. This is the first time the campaign will be rolled-out in Albury. Albury Local Area Commander, Acting Superintendent Evan Quarmby, said: “Dob in a Dealer is about mobilising the community to help stamp out the scourge of illicit drugs. “This important campaign reiterates the fact that while police can’t be on every street corner – together with the community – we can make a real difference to where and how these drugs are manufactured and distributed. “Make no mistake; prohibited drugs are produced by money-hungry criminals. The health and wellbeing of their customers is simply not a concern.

WEDNESDAY, 13 JULY 2016 “Many drugs like ‘ice’ are in fact manufactured in the filthiest of environments – run-down units, houses and factories polluted with leaking chemicals, toxic cutting agents and dirty equipment. “Not only do these clan labs produce drugs that cause serious harm to users, they can be highlycombustible properties that also pose a direct threat to the community around them. “If you know something about prohibited drugs in your neighbourhood, I urge you to come forward and make a report. What you know could be the key to making our community a safer place.” Methylamphetamine is a complex issue involving not only law enforcement, but is increasingly identified as a health issue. Dob in a Dealer is aimed at identifying the manufacturers and distributors of methylamphetamine and other illicit drugs, rather than the end user. Crime Stoppers is aware that some people reporting may have an existing addiction to drugs or may be family members of someone suffering an addiction. Crime Stoppers will refer those who require assistance to local health care agencies where they can discuss treatment options. If you or someone you know is affected by drug use or addiction, please contact support services such as Family Drug Help on 1300 660 068 or Youth Support and Advocacy Service on 1800 014 446.
