Push Pay and the Offering Plate: A Study in Change I admit it. I’m rather drawn to the Luddites. And who were they? Nineteenthcentury English textile workers who destroyed the new-fangled weaving machinery because they were used “fraudulently and deceitfully” to get around standard labor laws. They were not opposed to technology as such. Since then, however, the Luddites have been firmly associated with resistance to, and distrust of, technology and advancement. My point? The church is rolling out an app. If you don’t know what this is, you probably are a Luddite. Most of us use them on our cell phones, iPads, and tablets. Tap the favicon (also, perhaps, a new word for the icons that we download to our cell phones), and you will enter First Presbyterian Church’s world, with information at your fingertips. We hope very soon to make this such that announcements for various events will be pushed to the app, and you will receive it instantly and electronically. We need to cut down announcements on Sunday morning (there are far too many taking far too much time). We also need a platform where relevant groups can receive specific information in a timely manner. I plan to start a blog and perhaps a podcast just for church use. It is a marvelous and convenient way of communicating and so much more efficient than what I am now doing: writing an article for First Things that I suspect few read and hardly anyone gets in time for Sunday. We need to catch up with the times. The app also has a method of online giving. It is designed for ease of use. My attempt to give took less than ten seconds. Setting up your basic information will take a little longer. Some will object. Giving should be visible and tangible and a part of the worship service. My own research suggests that “The Offering” was an eighteenth-century introduction. In my first charge in Belfast, for example, following a Presbyterian order of worship, we never took up an offering during the service. Boxes were provided on the wall and people gave as they entered the building. There is nothing “regulatory” about the Offering Plate as such. We are not about to do away with the offering or anything like it. But we are introducing alternative ways that Millennials (so the significant research proves) will find helpful. And yes, this is stewardship season and this coming Sunday is “Stewardship Sunday.” I will address the topic of stewardship, jumping ahead several chapters. I also wanted you to know that, together with the help of our extraordinary Children’s department and our servant-like department head, Hannah Lampman, we have written a stewardship letter to the younger children of our church (a rapidly growing number!). It is never too early to learn the joy of giving back to the Lord a portion of what he has given to us. Learning it early will produce a lifetime of change. Derek W.H. Thomas Senior Minister

It’s Time for Operation Christmas Child Through Operation Christmas Child, God gives us an opportunity to touch a child in the name of his Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. We hope that many of our church members will participate as families and individuals to provide a wonderful Christmas treat and bring the message to children around the world. It is amazing how much joy these simple gifts bring to the lives of those who receive them! If you would prefer to donate toward shipping cost for the boxes, please make your check payable to First Presbyterian Church, noting OCC on the memo line. We have set up our shoebox table in the Atrium with shoeboxes and brochures. Please stop by to pick up and drop off your boxes. Boxes need to be back to the church by Sunday, November 12.
