The Larder is Empty What does the word “larder” mean? Answer: a cool area for storing food, otherwise known as a “pantry.” And the larder at First Presbyterian Church is nearly empty. No, I am not referring to the kitchen, but to the pantry that supplies funds to help those in need. There are two of these funds. The first is the Deacons’ Fund. This fund exists to help those who find themselves in financial need for whatever reason. Examples of such need might be the loss of regular income and a need to pay for rent, or a u lity bill, or even a funeral. This year the church has helped with almost 50 cases. Each one is carefully and discreetly ve ed, and typically consists of gi s averaging $1,000. The fund now stands at around $30,000. The other fund is the Disaster Relief Fund, and was established to cover events like the Columbia flooding of two years ago or, this year, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. In response to a request made from the pulpit a few months ago, a total of almost $50,000 was contributed to this fund in less than two weeks. The fund has distributed $170,000 in the last few weeks and now it has a balance of at $14,000. Four par cular churches and their families were given financial help, including Hai an families in Naples, Florida (in conjunc on with the Presbyterian Church in America), and several ARP church families in Texas. First Presbyterian Church is incredibly generous. We have been helped ourselves in the past and we desire to help others when opportunity and need arises. The larder in both the Deacons’ Fund and the Disaster Relief Fund is currently bare. This is a good thing, of course. It means we have distributed what you have given. Due to the increased needs, the Deacon commi ee in charge of these distribu ons have been working very hard—harder than at any me in recent history. I am therefore asking that, as Thanksgiving approaches, you would consider replenishing the pantry. You may do so easily employing the ease of the church app on your electronic devices. Or, you may place one of those white envelopes in the back of the pew in the offering plate ‐ perhaps at communion this Sunday ‐ and con nue a Presbyterian tradi on of giving to the poor at the Lord’s Supper. Helping those in need is one of those “good deeds” that Scripture says will lead others to glorify God: Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Ma . 5:16) Helping the church family in need is also something Scripture exhorts: Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. (Heb. 13:16) We have much to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving! Derek W.H. Thomas Senior Minister

Christmas with Luke Sundays in December with Dr. Derek W.H. Thomas

Thanksgiving for the Sojourner Thanksgiving is a joyous me when families gather together to celebrate God’s goodness and provision and give thanks for his many blessings throughout the year. In Deuteronomy 16:14, God instructed Israel to “rejoice in your feast” and to include in their celebra on “the sojourner … within your towns.” Today we have many sojourners within our town as interna onal students and visi ng scholars at the University of South Carolina. Would you consider sharing your Thanksgiving celebra on this year by invi ng an interna onal student, or two, to join you and your family at the table? It will make a las ng memory for you and could be the start of a redemp ve rela onship for them. If you are interested or would like more informa on, please contact Sco Andes by email at sco [email protected] or by phone at (803) 261‐4241.
