Hello Everyone! I’m Miss Jones. I am very excited to be starting my second year of teaching at Cambridge High School! For those of you who don’t know me, I would like to share a little bit about myself. I graduated from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1995 with a B.A in Biology. Over the years, I’ve taken many chemistry, biology and science related courses. I earned my teaching degree from Concordia University-Madison in June of 2011. Since then, I have worked as a substitute teacher in the Fort Atkinson and Janesville school districts. I started working at Cambridge High School in the fall of 2012. I grew up in Fort Atkinson and that is where I currently live. I’m quite athletic and spend a lot of my time running around after my two children. My daughter, Eliot is starting 6th grade and my son Alex is starting 3rd grade this year. We love doing just about anything outside. A few of my favorite activities are wakeboarding or surfing on hot, sunny days, hanging out with our chickens (sometimes we read them stories and poetry) and picking fresh raspberries. We have three cats and plan to get a dog in a few years. Finally, something unique about me; I’m quite picky about what I eat… I only eat organic fruits and veggies and humanely raised meat and fish that is hormone/antibiotic/cruelty free. I don’t eat any grains or processed foods. The closest thing to junk food you might see me eat is dark chocolate. I love dark chocolate. A few unusual foods I snack on are kimchi, kombucha, sushi, coconut butter and seaweed! I’m excited to get to know all of you and I’m looking forward to having fun while we explore the world of chemistry. J About Earth Science: This course is designed to help students master a basic understanding of geology, weather systems and reports and the Earth’s place in our universe. It will encourage you to observe, inquire, pose questions, design experiments, collect data and draw conclusions about your world. This course is not easy and it is very important to come to class prepared everyday and complete assignments on time. I am always available for extra help if necessary. Please see the end of this handout for a more detailed breakdown of the topics we will cover this semester. Required Supplies: • Notebook • Folder, for storing handouts • Something to write with (pen or pencil) • Textbook • Positive attitude • Scientific Calculator (does not have to be a graphing calculator. Required functions are scientific notation, pi, log, natural log, square root) • Optional Three-ring binder (for storing items we have mastered until the end of the semester) *You notebook, folder and binder should be used solely for chemistry and not shared with other subjects.

Late Work Policy: Late work must be made up as soon as possible. If you are absent one day, you will have one day to turn in late work. If you are absent two days, you will have two days to turn in or make up late work… and so on and so forth. If an assignment was due on the first day of your absence, it is expected you will turn the assignment in on the first day you return from your absence. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTACTING ME IN ORDER TO OBTAIN ASSIGNMENTS YOU MISSED DURING YOUR ABSENCE. You will receive a zero in the grade book until assignments are completed. Be prepared to take a test or quiz on the day you return from an absence if you were only gone for a one day absence. You must make immediate arrangements with me if you will not be able to make up your test or quiz right away. Points will be deducted from late homework assignments at approximately 10% a day for the first 5 days. Assignments will be considered late even if you were absent and do not make up the assignments in the allowed timeframe. Any assignment turned in after 5 days will be worth 50%. You may turn in any late assignments throughout the whole semester for a maximum grade of 50%. I do allow retakes for certain tests and quizzes with a maximum score of 78% (C+). Reading assignments, Taking Notes and Practicing Calculations: This class will require a lot of reading, vocabulary mastery, note taking and practice calculations. It is extremely important to bring your textbook, notebook and calculator to class with you every day. The reading assignments are foundational to the class. Lectures and homework assignments will be based on content you will read and review in the textbook. Quizzes, Tests and The Semester Final: There will be several quizzes each week, often they will be part of the bell activity and often they will be a separate quiz. Depending on the unit, you may be able to use your notebook or homework assignments for the quiz therefore it is very beneficial to take detailed notes in class. You may also add additional notes or vocabulary terms to your notebook that you feel would be helpful for any quizzes. You will not be able to go to your locker to retrieve materials for a quiz if you do not come to class prepared. Tests will generally be given at the end of a chapter or unit. For each test you will be allowed to create a “cheat sheet” on a 4 x 6 note card. Depending on the chapter or unit, other information may be provided for you such as equations, charts or constants. Labs: We will typically have a lab approximately every two to three weeks designed to enforce and enrich the concepts in the current unit. It is extremely important for everyone’s safety that lab safety rules are strictly followed for every lab. 10% of every lab grade will reflect lab safety rules: for example, goggle usage and other safety precautions, following the laboratory procedure. Students must have a signed lab safety contract and perfect lab quiz score before they can perform any lab activities.

Highlighted Classroom Rules and Procedures: Always treat those around you with respect. This includes your teacher, other staff and your peers. Electronic devices (smart phones, dumb phones, iPods, iPads, etc) will not be used in the chemistry classroom except for very specific assignments. They must be turned off or silenced and placed out of sight and out of mind during class. If you would like to use your laptop or other device to take class notes, please see me. Cheating will result in an immediate office referral. Cheating includes copying homework or other assignments from another student while outside of class. Lab Safety is extremely important! All lab safety rules must be followed for each and every lab. A separate lab safety contract will be reviewed during class and must be signed. Students must earn a perfect score on the lab safety quiz before they may perform any lab activities. My expectations as your teacher: Arrive to class prepared, on time with required supplies (completed homework or reading assignment, textbook, notebook, folder, binder, pen or pencil) and you scientific calculator, everyday J Turn in your homework assignments on time J Arrive to class with a positive attitude, each and every day J Arrive to class with your electronic devices turned OFF and stowed FAR away from temptation J Follow classroom procedures each and every day J Follow school rules and policies each and every day J Seek help immediately when something doesn’t make sense, please don’t wait! I am here to help J Put fourth your best effort J Grading Policy: Every student has the opportunity to earn an A in this class. The grading brake down is an approximation and includes the following… 15% 20% 25% 20% 20%

Homework, Bell Activities Quizzes Unit Tests Labs Semester Exam (cumulative)

***Effort (class participation, attendance, seeking help when needed, turning assignments in on time, following classroom and school policies, treating those around you with respect, etc) has the potential to bump your grade up if you are boarder-line.
