West Chester University Tennis Lessons 2017 Tennis Lessons & Camp Director: Tina Tharp (for quickest response please email Coach Tharp at [email protected]) Tina Tharp, the first full-time tennis coach in WCU history, has been the Men’s & Women’s Head Tennis Coach at West Chester University for the past 8 years. She has taught and coached all ages how to play for more than 26 years. Currently, Tharp was named the USTA Middle States College Coach of the Year for 2015. Assistant Director: Stan Cramer ([email protected]) is an Associate Professor of Kinesiology/Physical Education at West Chester University. He has over thirty years teaching and coaching experience with one of his areas of specialty being racket sports. The focus of Stan’s teaching in the Department of Kinesiology is high school and middle school physical education, however he especially enjoys working with beginners no matter what their age. ABOUT THE PROGRAMS Coach Tharp takes a “games-based” approach to her teaching methods. Students will be actively engaged and playing tennis within a matter of minutes upon stepping on the tennis court. This is accomplished through creative games and drills. The tennis lessons and camp will be conducted on WCU’s South Campus courts located just north of the Sturzebecker Health Science Center. The facility houses 12 hard courts. The dates and times for the 2017 WCU Tennis Lessons & Camps are listed below. WCU TENNIS LESSONS All lessons are Monday thru Thursday; the length of the clinic is 60 minutes and run for two weeks. Friday’s are held for rain make-ups. Students will be put into groups based on skill level, with four players to a court. Our goal is to offer a variety of programs for children and teens of all skill levels. June - July Session 1: June 5-15 Munchkin Clinic Jr Development Clinic

SKILL LEVELS - DESCRIPTIONS Munchkin Clinic: introduces 4-7 year old children to the game of tennis through a variety of fun skillbuilding activities. The primary focus is on developing an athletic foundation by emphasizing agility, balance and coordination. Players will work on proper technique and learn tennis terminology, including parts of the tennis court and names of stances, strokes and grips. Goals for Munchkin Clinic: basic knowledge of parts of the tennis court and names of stances, strokes and grips.

Beginner (Junior Development Clinic): is for players ages 8-18 at the beginner level. The focus is on developing a solid technical base in movement and stroke production. Participants will learn rules and basic strategy. Goals for Junior Development Clinic: rally from the baseline of a 60ft court, serve into the correct service box, have direction on groundstrokes and have a good understanding of proper grips and swing paths

WCU TENNIS CAMP The WCU Tennis Camp is for players 10-18 years old. Students will be grouped together by skill level. The Camp is run Monday thru Thursday; with Friday’s held for rain make-ups.

WCU 1-DAY CLINIC If you are a competitive tennis player thinking of playing college tennis, whether it be at West Chester or some other University this clinic will give them a taste of collegiate tennis and some additional information, plus a QA with current players (to see how they handle being a student-athlete).
