Wolverines travel to Gwinnett County… We are headed back to Gwinnett County tonight for a regular season matchup against the Dacula Falcons (1-2, 0-0), a former playoff opponent from seasons past. The Wolverines and Falcons will square off for just the second time, and for this meeting the two teams are representing different classifications as Dacula remained in 6A while West Forsyth was elevated to 7A. Don’t let their record fool you, this is a loaded football team. The Falcons were ranked as high as 4th in 6A just two weeks ago, but they have since dropped consecutive games to archrival rival Mill Creek (#2 in 7A) and Arabia Mountain (#8 in 5A) and are looking to right the ship before entering region play. West Forsyth is entering the game after a spectacular win over Hillgrove last week. The offense finally hit the ground running and managed to put the ball in the endzone 7 times. West received the opening kickoff and took the ball 80 yards in 8 plays for Grant Torgerson’s (LB/TB #2) first rushing touchdown of the night. It didn’t stop there for #2 as Torgerson went on to finish the game with FIVE rushing touchdowns, and his night wasn’t limited to offense. At outside linebacker he also had 9 tackles and a strip sack that Thomas Arundale (FB/LB #11) would scoop up and take 81 yards to the house. With that score, Arundale captured the trifecta of scoring a touchdown in all three phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams – and he did it by game 3. Quarterback Kiernen Hamilton (#9) also had himself a night with 281 yards passing on 25 attempts and 2 touchdowns – the first to Zach Burns (HB/P #5) early in the first quarter and the second to none other than Arundale. After a few big plays in the first half, the Wolverine defense settled in and shut the Hawks’ offense down. Zach Wheeler (S #3) made a touchdown-saving tackle, perhaps the biggest play of the game, near our own goalline that prompted Arundale’s defensive score. Cade Vela (CD #23) also came up big with an interception at midfield that would lead to Torgerson’s fourth touchdown of the evening just 5 plays later. If the defense can keep forcing turnovers and putting our offense in good situations, good things are on tap for the Wolverines. West was back at work this week preparing for what could be an even bigger challenge than Hillgrove. Dacula finished with a mere 5-5 record last season behind a lot of young talent. Those players have now grown into veteran leaders looking for a region championship and deep playoff run in their new region that no longer includes Grayson, Archer, or Central Gwinnett. Tonight’s weather *appears* to be much different than the monsoon we experienced during our trip to Dacula in 2013. This is our last away game before we start region play, and we need you there. We hope you’ll make the trip over to Gwinnett county and cheer us on. It should be another awesome night under the lights!
