And, you are behind it, bringing ingenuity to oil and gas extraction, transportation and refining. From the wellhead to the wheel, if there is a mechanical process involved, you may have a hand in it.

What does this career look like? You oversee the introduction of new equipment and systems, and that often means researching, planning, designing, installing, commissioning, repairing, redesigning and troubleshooting. You also play a role in maintaining and sustaining existing equipment, which can include running simulations and models. You may be doing desk work or you may be going to the field, where you oversee operations. You may serve as a Drilling Engineer or Wellsite Supervisor, where you’ll use your engineering skills to oversee drilling operations. Or, you could be designing equipment for oil and gas operations. You can also take on more specialized positions. Perhaps you are conducting simulations and stress analysis in down-hole drilling equipment as a Stress Engineer. Want complexity? Refinery design and construction it is as a Manufacturing Engineer or updating and sustaining current tools and technologies as a Sustaining Engineer.

A post-secondary degree in mechanical or civil engineering (or a related discipline) from an institution accredited by Engineers Canada is typically required. Licensing To obtain a licence as a professional engineer (P. Eng), you must obtain a degree from an accredited engineering program, pass a professional practice exam and have three or four years of engineering experience, of which one year must be gained in Canada. You are also required to have Canadian citizenship or proof of permanent residency in Canada.

What would I do? You provide technical support and manage the design of tools and processes to make them work, whether through pressure, gravity or muscle. You design machines and equipment to better interact with people. You perform duties related to the evaluation, installation, operation, and failure analysis and maintenance of mechanical systems. A large component of your work is providing solutions. There could be a problem in the field. You might find the properly designed tool or a customized solution. Specifically, your activities can include: 4 Generating engineering drawings, process flow diagrams and other documentation 4 Interpreting blueprints, technical drawings and schematics 4 Evaluating erosion, corrosion and other malfunctions and failures
