As a Construction Craft Worker, you’re in an ideal job for a new entrant to the oil and gas-related construction industry who wants to learn the ropes. You will do a lot of the heavy lifting assisting welders, carpenters, insulators, concrete finishers, boilermakers and ironworkers. Watch what they do. One day, you might be one of them. What a great way to get started in the industry!
What does this career look like? You’re the second set of hands for many in oil and gas-related construction. One day, you may be running a chain saw, and the next day, you could be installing valves or helping surveyors slash trees, move equipment or help with their tools. You could work with a pipeline crew, helping to space pipe. You have the strength to backfill a pipeline ditch while ensuring the pipeline doesn’t get damaged by rocks or other debris. You enjoy this career because you love to work outside and be physical, and you thrive on variety. You’re especially keen to learn from others.

What would I do? You do a little of everything. You perform a wide array of tasks, including preparing and cleaning a work site, setting up and removing equipment, and assisting on concrete, masonry, steel, wood or pre-cast erection projects. Some days are all about demolition or excavation, while others are all about set up and assistance. You might also do site safety and security checks. As far as equipment goes, you could be operating air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, mechanical hoists or surveying and measuring equipment. Other tasks you may be required to do as a Construction Craft Worker include: ``
Mixing, pouring and spreading concrete using portable cement mixers
``
Controlling traffic around the work site
``
Measuring, marking and recording the area where construction work will be performed

Assisting in drilling or blasting rock at the work site

HOW DO I GET HERE? Grade 10 education (or equivalent) and completion of a two-year apprenticeship program is typically required to become a certified tradesperson. Some previous experience in construction is preferred. The Red Seal endorsement is the interprovincial standard of excellence, and is available to tradespersons upon successful completion of the Red Seal examination.
