What is the Mission Area Share? Mission Area Share is the portion of the diocesan budget (the amount it costs to run the diocese) provided by the churches in our Mission Areas to fund and support the work of their church and the diocese. It is calculated every year and takes into account: • The
clergy serving in a Mission Area
• The
average number of regular Sunday worshippers in the Mission Area
A subsidy of approx. £1m is provided by the Representative Body of the Church in Wales. This helps to reduce every share.
Diocesan investments help bring down the share.
The diocesan budget is more than £4,9m. £3.3m of these running costs come from the Share. The rest comes from a subsidy from the Church in Wales and from our diocesan investments.
For every £1 the diocese spends: 70p on clergy costs 9p on clergy homes 7p on diocesan officers/support staff 7p on mission through the diocesan steering groups 7p on other costs
The development of Mission Areas All churches in the Diocese are now part of a Mission Area.
Income budget for 2018: £4,527,345
Representatives from all 21 Mission Areas have met and agreed their Mission Area Share for 2018, a process which is rooted in the theology of generosity and approached around the principles of the Gospel. Share will increase by 3% this year, across the diocese, which is broadly in line with inflation. To lessen the impact of increased costs on our congregations at this time of change, the Diocesan Conference has approved a deficit budget for the third successive year. It is hoped that this will allow a continued focus on the many new initiatives in churches across the diocese that are already showing encouraging signs of growth and new hope.
Expenditure budget for 2018: £4,909,615
This deficit will be funded from Diocesan reserves and a strategy is being developed to return the diocese to a balanced budget within a realistic timeframe.
