What Makes Your Father So Great?
| Xavier Scott Preston
Editor’s Note: In a salute to Fathers, N@TM staff member Xavier Scott Kanari: “My dad is great because he loves me.” - Mia Abdullateef, Preston interviewed several MSBC youth about what makes their Mubarak Abdullateef, Ahmad Farrell and Kamari Farrell for Rick fathers so great. As usual, the comments were plentiful but space was Abdullateef limited, so check out a sampling of what was gathered. Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads! “My dad does his best to prepare me for the realities of life and helps me grow into a strong noble man who can manage/control my emotions. Being a father means putting aside all of your wants and desires for family. My father teaches me to be responsible and he imparts wisdom so I can make better decisions. He also ensures that my sister has the love she needs so she can obtain self-respect and respect from others.” - Bernard Myers III for Bernard Myers II “My Father is creative and is always there to help others. He also tries his best to make other people happy.” McKenzie Campbell for Deacon Mark Campbell
At 6: DAD I love you. At 10: DAD whatever. At 16: My DAD is so annoying At 18: I wanna leave this house.
Mia: “My dad is caring and helps me understand life in a better way.” Mubarak: “My Father takes care of me and helps me feel better when I am sick. He buys me clothes and protects me.” Ahmad: “My dad is great because he is awesome.”
At 25: DAD, you were right. At 30: I want to go to DAD’s house. At 50: I don’t want to lose my DAD. At 70: I would give up everything for my DAD to be here with me. ~ Anonymous
Scripture of the Month: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” ~ Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
MSBC Missionary Ministry Disaster Helps Flintcont’d Michigan Residents | Min. Robert Williams Preparing for a Natural “When I decided to volunteer my time and travel to Flint, Michigan and assist the citizens I was very surprised by the number of citizens that had deserted the city,” said Bro. Lee King, one of the seven persons who traveled to Flint, Michigan on April 25-29, to assist the residents who have been impacted by the water crisis in the city. The team also included: Sis. Gwendolyn Garnes, Sis. Shonta Jones, Deacon Lorenzo Marks, Bro. Alphonso Morgan, Bro. Anthony Morrisey and Deacon James Nelson. The lead that contaminated the water is having a devastating effect on the people. Not only have some deserted their homes King shared, but some are suffering health consequences as well. At one point water was being pumped in from Detroit. He stated that to actually see the people of Flint, who are mostly AfricanAmerican, suffer so much, caused him to seek prayer for them and to pray for more to be done. Deacon Lorenzo Marks wanted to travel to Flint so that he could assist in any way he could. “Upon arrival I was very surprised that the situation has been going on for over three years,” he said. He added that he feels there should be more federal involvement. Limited by water usage, the team had to take showers using as little water as possible. “I felt compelled to go, because I wanted to help the people," said Gwendolyn Garnes. “The niceness and politeness of the people made an impact on me. When we came in contact with not only the host church, but the residents throughout the city, everyone was so gracious, extremely warm and inviting. They made us feel so welcome.” Deacon Nelson distributed bottled water from the host church The First Trinity Baptist Church which served as a distribution site. “I really admired the resiliency of the Flint citizens.” He also noticed that because of the crisis, unemployment and disparity is high.

College Bound Hosts a “Hot Wash” Discussion | Pamela Payne
Vacation Bible School Begins June 20th | Xavier Scott Preston Attention Ladies and Gentlemen of all ages. Vacation Bible School (VBS) 2016 is just a few weeks away! This year’s session will take place Monday June 20th through Friday June 24th. The times for each session are 8:00am-12:30pm for children and youth. For adults, sessions are from 10:00am-noon.
The MSBC College Bound students closed out the program year on Friday, May 6, 2016 with a “hot-wash” discussion. Each student provided their input on their likes and dislikes, how the program has helped them, and ideas on how to enhance the program experience. All of the students agreed that they really enjoyed the “Career & Opportunities” session, where various young professionals spoke to the students on their respective careers. The students received insight on the following professions: health care, engineering, non-profit, law and journalism. Each speaker provided insight on their individual career path, education requirements, and the value of hard work. We were even fortunate enough to have a former College Bound alum to speak to the students about “College Life”. Since 2011, I have been leading the College Bound Program and I must say that by far this has been one of the largest and most productive College Bound classes. Since 2011, College Bound has had over 50 program participants and has graduated over 15 students. In addition, the program has experienced an increase in participants in the last five years. This year, there will be five seniors graduating from the program and all will be attending an institution of higher learning!!! We are truly excited and proud of our young people. They have been very committed to the program and they value the importance of education. Our prayer is that what the MSBC College Program deposits into our youth, will be a return investment on building future educators, lawyers, doctors, firefighters, engineers, administrators, business owners and community leaders. Proverbs 29:14 states that, “Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory”. Let us continue to be examples and mentors to the next generation and instill the hope that there are NO BOUNDARIES!!!!
This year’s sessions are centered around the theme “I've Got Talent.” “I’ve Got Talent” comes from Ephesians 2:10, “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (NIV). Lessons from this theme will help participants examine the lives and special work God prepared for Noah, Joseph, Esther, Tabitha, Paul and Jesus. These lessons will also encourage participants to take a closer look at their own special work or talent God has prepared in them to do. Are you looking for a unique opportunity to serve and interact with individuals of all ages? If so, you are encouraged to team up with VBS leaders, as volunteers are still needed for this year’s session. Contact Deaconess Paula Nesmith, Sis. Frances Young or email
[email protected] indicating your desired area of service. Participants can register to attend VBS by visiting, MSBCDC.org. We hope to see you!
Remembrance of Women’s Day: A Tribute Poem By: Delores Trimiar
As I look back over the years and begin to reminisce, I start thinking about the women of the Mount that I miss. All the ones that participated in the past Women’s Days – those that have long since over the years passed away; I have sample flowers that remind me of all the beauty that we displayed when we sang and did our duty. As women of Mount Sinai and servants of the church, oh how I miss many of my friends and the pain still lurks. Especially when I lost my best friend Sylvia Moore, and I can name many more, but that would be such a chore. So as I begin to look forward to this year’s activity, I will again make flowers and think about the festivity. And hum, “we are, we are little flowers in the garden of life. We are still down here going through trouble and strife Hum um!” But we as women of Mount Sinai know this one thing and perhaps you can tell in one of the songs that we sing. If you are having problems, circumstances seem dim, and you call on loved ones, but can’t find any of them. We come to tell you that you are destined to prevail, because God is able, He is able and He cannot fail! So come join us my friend and help us praise His name, and your remembrance of Women’s Day will never be the same.
The College Bound Program will be on vacation until September 2016. For more information, please feel free to email the College Bound Team at
