WHO NEEDS TO TAKE THE SAT OR ACT EXAMS? What? The SAT and ACT are external university admissions exams that test English (reading, writing, vocabulary), math and essay writing. The ACT also has a science section. Students usually need to take either the SAT or ACT for admissions to:   

Universities in U.S. (all students), Canada (High School Diploma students only), Japan (High School Diploma students only) Some other countries in Europe require the SAT if you are in G12. Check individual universities for information. Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) requires the SAT test from High School Diploma applicants. IMPORTANT CHANGE: The SAT test will change in 2016. See page 2 for details.

For IB students, in rare cases some universities in Europe and Asia require SAT scores. Check university websites to confirm. SAT Subject Tests are usually optional (check individual university requirements). You can take up to 3 subject tests on a single testing date. When? Plan to take the exam for the first time during your G11, IB1 or première year. Students often take the exam more than one time. You must take the exams before the university application deadline – usually by the December exam date. The SAT test dates are January, May, June, October, November, December; ACT dates are April, June, September, October and December. Check the websites for specific dates. NEW SAT Exam to begin Spring 2016 The SAT exam will change in format as of March 2016. Students in Grade 11, IB1 and première should think carefully about taking the new format SAT. Because there are many unknowns regarding the new SAT, CDL recommends that you consider taking the ACT exam which will not change. More on page 2. How to register? You must register on your own. The exams are not coordinated through the school. SAT: www.sat.org/international ACT: www.actstudent.org/intl The exams are only given 5-6 times a year on a specific date. Plan to register no later than 5 weeks in advance of the test date. How can I prepare? It is important to practice for these exams! Your goal is to achieve the highest score you can. There is no pass or fail.    

CHANGES TO THE SAT TEST TO START IN 2016

The College Board will introduce a new version of the SAT exam will begin in spring 2016. The change will mainly affect students currently in grade 10, IG2, 2nde who plan to begin university in fall 2017. Further details about the changes to the SAT can be found on the College Board website www.collegeboard.org

WHAT WILL CHANGE ON THE SAT TEST?     

The new format will be offered starting in March 2016. The SAT will continue to test English reading, writing, language and math skills. The new format will change the way the test is structured, administered, timed and scored. The essay section will be optional. The scoring will be out of 1600 (up to 800 points on the English and math sections) and the essay scored separately.



The questions will have an increased emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, and data analysis.

WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS DO TO PREPARE FOR THE SAT CHANGES?  

 

Students who will be in G12, IB2, términale in 2015-2016 should take the current SAT exam between October 2015 – January 2016, or take the ACT. Students who will be in G11, IB1, première or below, CDL recommends they consider taking the ACT in 2016. The ACT exam will not change and there are preparation books, courses and materials easily available. CDL will offer a prep class for the current SAT in September 2015. We will also offer ACT prep classes. Preparation materials for the new SAT are available through the Khan Academy website and sample new SAT questions are on the SAT website.
