And, stay cool!

DO YOU NEED A NEW HOME COOLING SYSTEM? Is your central air conditioner or heat pump more than 12 years old? Are you uncomfortable when it’s hot outside?

GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR It’s not just the quality of the home cooling equipment; it’s also the quality of the installation. It takes good training and advanced technology to properly install today’s high efficiency central air conditioning equipment. NATE is the nation’s largest independent organization for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians. Its technicians are trained and tested to provide quality installations. Consider having a NATE certified contractor install your central air conditioning system to bring you peace of mind and comfort.

If so, New Jersey’s COOL Advantage program can help you get a new, energy-efficient air conditioning system that will help you save on your electricity bill while keeping you cool.

ARE YOU COOLING THE OUTDOORS If your home doesn’t have enough insulation or leaks too much air, even the most efficient air conditioner will waste energy all summer. That would be like keeping your windows and doors open while using your air conditioner. New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program also offers the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program which can help you:

DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT BREAKS DOWN If you are like most people, you will probably wait until your old cooling system stops working before you replace it, usually when it’s hot outside. If your central air conditioning unit is more than 12 years old, replacing it with a new, properly sized unit will help you save money now. Replacing your cooling system in the off-season (from October to April) will also make it easier to schedule a contractor.

• Identify sources of wasted energy; • Increase the comfort, safety and durability of your home; • Make money-saving improvements; and • Save up to 30% or more on your home energy costs. Low-interest financing and generous incentives are available to help you get the work done. Call 866-NJSMART for more information.

Any style or size home can meet New Jersey ENERGY STAR Homes Program’s standards for superior energy performance, using 15%–50% less energy.

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE AN ENERGY EXPERT TO MAKE THE RIGHT HOME HEATING DECISION. Choosing high efficiency heating equipment can save you money on your heating bills, while reducing pollution associated with energy use. 1. Energy Efficiency All furnaces and boilers have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating, a standard set by the United States Department of Energy. Simply put, it measures how much of your dollar actually goes toward heating your home. The higher the rating, the higher the efficiency of the equipment. Look for the ENERGY STAR® to ensure you are getting heating equipment that has a high rating for energy efficiency.

2. Properly Sized Equipment A recent New Jersey study shows that most furnaces are significantly oversized. Buying a system sized properly for your home provides more comfort and efficiency, while maximizing your heating investment. When replacing your system, simply updating your system with the same size equipment may not give you the best results. Ask your contractor to perform a heat-loss calculation to determine the proper size furnace or boiler for your home.

3. Ductwork Make sure that the existing ductwork in your home will be compatible with your new heating system. Sometimes duct systems are too small to allow proper airflow. A contractor will be able to detect this potential problem and test how well your current ductwork is sealed. If leaks are discovered, your contractor should fix them using quality sealants. A well-designed, tightly sealed and insulated duct system will increase your comfort by getting the right amount of heat to each room in your home. You can find a qualified contractor on NJCleanEnergy.com/HP.

4. Programmable Thermostat Installing a programmable thermostat is an easy way to conserve energy and save money in your home. A programmable thermostat gives you increased control over the way you heat your home by allowing you to adjust your heating system. Lowering your thermostat by as little as 3 degrees at night will help you save on your heating bill. Look for an ENERGY STAR qualified model.

INSTALLATION 1. Best Practices Equipment installation procedures may vary, so it is very important that your contractor install your new heating equipment according to the manufacturer’s installation manual.

2. Access Maintenance is very important when it comes to maximizing the efficiency of your new heating unit. The unit should be easily accessible so that tasks like cleaning or replacing the filters are easy to perform.

CARING FOR YOUR NEW HEATING SYSTEM Once you have purchased and installed your new high efficiency heating system, routine maintenance will maximize the system’s energy efficiency, economic benefits and life span. Your new furnace or boiler should be serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.

Energy Savings Reduced Monthly Bills A More Comfortable Home A Cleaner Environment

5. Incentives If you purchase an ENERGY STAR qualified furnace or boiler, you could be eligible for an incentive up to $400. New qualifying levels for furnaces went into effect on July 15, 2012, so be sure to check the website at NJCleanEnergy.com/HEATING for criteria.

INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR HOME, YOUR FAMILY AND THE ENVIRONMENT IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK.

As with any home appliance, proper installation and care of your new water heater will maximize the benefits you’ll enjoy.

In emergency situations, water heaters are replaced in haste based solely on storage tank size. Many times homeowners purchase the same size tank as the previous unit. By preparing yourself with some basic information, you will be able to make an informed decision regarding the best water heater for your home. 1. Energy Efficiency All water heaters have an Energy Factor (EF) rating. The EF measures how efficiently your water heater burns gas. Visit NJCleanEnergy.com/WH to ensure you choose a system with the proper energy factor to be eligible for a rebate.

2. First-Hour Rating (FHR) The FHR measures how much hot water the unit will deliver during a high-demand hour. Your installer can help you calculate the appropriate FHR to meet your household needs.

3. Equipment Capacity An oversized water heater wastes energy when not in use. Make sure your installer helps you choose a system sized to meet your family’s needs.

WARMAdvantage PROGRAM

• Consider choosing a North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certified contractor or a Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified contractor. Visit the Eastern Heating and Cooling Council’s website at eh-cc.org for a current list of NATE certified contractors or NJCleanEnergy.com/HP for a list of BPI certified contractors. • Like home heating systems, a water heater should be properly vented. New vertical, horizontal and mechanically generated venting options allow more flexibility when choosing the unit size and location. Ask your contractor to check the venting of your water heater. • Because sediment from the water can collect in the bottom of the water heater, one bucketful of water should be drained from the bottom of the tank once a month. Ask your installer to demonstrate how this task should be performed.

An ENERGY STAR® qualified solar water heating system can cut your annual hot water costs in half, and is generally designed for use with an electric or gas back-up water heater. These systems can substantially reduce your carbon footprint. Your first step is to determine if your house is suitable for a solar water heater. For maximum results, your roof should:

• Check for leaks around the fittings. If you suspect leakage, contact a licensed plumber to have the leaks sealed.

• Receive direct sunlight between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM year round; • Face south (within 15°); and • Be sturdy with the shingles in good condition. You will then want to contact a local solar water heater contractor, who can assess your site, provide recommendations, install a system and then perform periodic maintenance. Visit NJCleanEnergy.com/SWH for a list of solar water heater contractors.
