22402 B: Running Horses Print (Backing) • Cut fabric in half lengthwise. Sew the two pieces together along the selvedge with a 1" seam. Trim the seam allowance to ½" and press open or to one side. Trim to measure 70" x 70" Half Square Triangle Sewing Directions
You will make the four cuts, shown below, resulting in four border strips that are approximately 11" x LOF. ↑

To make HST (half square triangle) units, draw a diagonal line (A) on the wrong side of the lighter colored square. With right sides together (B), place this square on top of another square. Sew a scant ¼" seam on each side of the drawn line (C). Cut on the drawn line, yielding (2) HST units. Press the seams open. Square up the HST units to 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" (D).

Wild Horses 1. Make (48) HST units using the Green Horses, Cream Horse Shoes and Brown Horses 5 ¾" x 5 ¾" squares. Pair together the squares as follows; HST Unit A - (8) Green Horses with (8) Cream Horse Shoes, HST Unit B - (8) Green Horses with (8) Brown Horses, HST Unit C - (8) Cream Horse Shoes with (8) Brown Horses.
Unit A 16 Units
Unit B 16 Units
3. Sew (2) quadrants together as shown below to make one half of the quilt top center. Sew the remaining (2) quadrants together to make the other half of the quilt top center. Press the seams for both halves to the right. Make sure that the quadrants are rotated correctly.
Unit C 16 Units
Quilt Center Assembly Use pins and take the time to match all points for all the Quilt Center Assembly steps
4. Sew the two halves together to form the quilt top center. Make sure that the halves are rotated correctly. Press the seam to one side. The quilt top center should measure 38 ½" x 38 ½".
1. The quilt top center will be assembled in four quadrants using the same layout. For each quadrant, use (4) each of the following HST units; Unit A, Unit B and Unit C, along with (3) Cream Horse Shoes (22405 E) 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" squares and (1) Green Horses (22404 G) 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" square. Lay out the units as shown in the images below. Make sure that all units are rotated correctly.
Adding The Mitered Borders 2. Sew the HST units and squares together into rows. Press the seams for each row in opposite directions, as shown by the arrows in the image. Now sew the rows together. Press the seams toward the top row. Repeat to make four quadrants. Make sure that all rows are rotated correctly.

Inner Border: Brown Stripe 22408 A - (4) @ 1 ½" x 44" Outer Border: Border Print 22403 B - (4) strips @ approximately 11" x 67" 1. On the wrong side of the quilt top, in each corner, measure ¼" in from each side. Mark this point with pencil or chalk. Do this for the other three corners. Also find the center of each side of the quilt top and mark with a pin. Set this aside.

Wild Horses 2. Find the center of the length for all your strips. Mark the center with chalk on the wrong side of both edges for all the strips.
7. Attach the remaining pair of Border strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top, matching the pinned center marks. The marks made on both ends of the border strip pairs should match the marks made on the corners of the quilt top. Sew from one ¼" corner mark to the opposite ¼" corner mark. Do not knot or sew in reverse; leave long thread tails. Don’t trim the extra border fabric yet. Press away from the border strip
3. Sew one of the 11" wide Border print strips to (1) of the 1 ½" x 44" Brown Stripe Inner Border strips; make sure the center marks are matched. Make sure that the strips are rotated correctly. (See the image below in step 5.) Repeat this step to make (4) Border strip sets. For (1) pair, press the seams toward the outer border. For the remaining pair, press the seams away from the outer border.
8. As shown in the diagram below, fold the quilt in half diagonally, right sides together, toward the corner that you are working on. Using a pin, align and interlock the seams at the ¼" corner marks pin in place. Make sure that all the border strip seams are aligned. Sew on the line you drew, leaving long thread tails. Open quilt to make sure that the intersection lays flat. Tie off all the thread tails in this corner, using a square knot. Press seam open. Repeat this on (3) remaining corners.
4. Measure the length of the quilt through the center, from top to bottom and side to side. If these measurements are not the same add the two measurements together and divide by 2, this will be the length for all four sides. Subtract ½" from this length and divide the resulting measurement in half. Use this measurement to place a mark, on the wrong side, ¼" in from the raw edge, on both ends of the Border strip. 5. Draw a line through the mark you just made on the Border that is 45 degrees from the raw edge of the outer border. Make sure that you can see the ¼" mark on the line. See image below for reference. Trim the extra border fabric leaving a ¼" seam allowance. Center ↓

6. Attach a pair of Border strip sets, with matching pressed seam directions, to the sides of the quilt top, matching the pinned center marks. The marks made on both ends of the Border strip pairs should match the marks made on the corners of the quilt top. Sew from one ¼" corner mark to the opposite ¼" corner mark. Do not knot or sew in reverse; leave long thread tails. Don’t trim the extra border fabric yet. Press the seam toward the border strip.
9. Layer quilt, quilt as desired. Finish with binding.
