Snowman Superstars Kristen was so excited her knees were shaking. She celebrated her twelfth birthday two weeks ago. This meant Kristen was finally old enough to enter the Sandersville Super Snowman Contest. Every year her town of Sandersville had a snowman building contest. There were many categories such as most creative snowman, animal snowmen, and silliest snowman. Kristen wasn’t interested in those categories. She thought they were too easy. Kristen planned to enter the toughest contest. She had her eye on the prize for the biggest snowman. The winner won a huge trophy and the title of Snowman Superstar. “Are you sure you don’t want your sister to help you?” her mom asked. “Teams of two are allowed for the biggest snowman category. It will be much harder by yourself and not as much fun.” “No,” Kristen groaned as she walked to her assigned building spot. “I want to do this by myself. It is my turn to win a trophy!” Kristen glanced at her big sister, Sarah. She was all dressed in her snow gear ready to go. For a second, Kristen felt guilty for not letting her help. Then, she remembered Sarah’s room full of shiny trophies. Kristen had never won anything and wanted this trophy for the snowman contest all to herself. Sharing it with Sarah just wouldn’t be the same! “Your time begins now!” the announcer said in his deep voice. “You have thirty minutes to make the biggest snowman possible.” Kristen almost jumped out of her boots. She began gathering snow to make the base of her snowman. Her base had to be huge in order to win. Without a big and sturdy base, her snowman would fall over. When the base was ready, Kristen began collecting snow for the middle section. She glanced around at the other teams. Everyone else had a partner. She knew she had already beaten a few teams. They were still working on the bottom section of their snowmen. Other teams were slightly ahead of her though. One thing all the other teams had in common was that they were all smiling and laughing with their partners. They were having much more fun than Kristen. Kristen thought about the trophy she would have all for herself if she won. She glanced at her sister. Sarah was smiling and cheering Kristen along just a few feet away even after Kristen had been so rude to her. Kristen waved Sarah over to her spot. “Maybe having fun with your sister is more important than a trophy,” she said to Sarah as they both began to work on the snowman. Jordie Holland 2015
