OCLC Membership

We advance further, faster

together. OCLC is a global library cooperative that provides shared technology services, original research and community programs for its membership and the library community at large. We are librarians, technologists, researchers, pioneers, leaders and learners. Together as OCLC, we transform the way people engage with information, and together we make breakthroughs possible.

Extend your reach with OCLC membership. Membership in OCLC is active—you connect with other libraries to share knowledge, expertise and experience, optimising your ability to serve your users with innovative services.

With more than 16,000 member institutions in 120 countries encompassing a rich diversity of library types, OCLC® membership presents unparalleled opportunity to extend your reach and make an impact that echoes around the world. You become a member by sharing holdings information, contributing metadata and sharing materials and resources using OCLC services.

OCLC membership brings: • An opportunity to influence and guide OCLC, as a global cooperative, through voting for your regional Global Council delegates and participating in user groups • A connection to a global network of libraries for learning, communication and collaboration • Cost savings through shared and cloud-based solutions • Access to WorldCat®—the most comprehensive global network of data about library collections and services with 2.5 billion holdings and growing • Library-centred research, providing members with information on important topics and trends, including access to OCLC Research reports • Advancement of librarianship through scholarships and development programs such as internships, fellowships and collaborations with professional communities

“You have a voice...”

“Members have a very important voice. OCLC is ‘us’—not ‘them.’ Members share basic values of what the library is about and wants to achieve. With OCLC, we can and do achieve what we couldn’t do separately.” Madeleine Lefebvre

Chief Librarian, Ryerson University (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), OCLC Global Council delegate for the Americas Region (2013 – 2016), OCLC Board of Trustees (November 2016 – present)

Member-driven, member-governed

Learn more about membership at oc.lc/membership.

A significant benefit of membership is that member institutions elect member delegates to represent their local and regional views on issues facing libraries today. Delegates give member libraries a voice to inform, shape and influence OCLC direction through active participation in meetings and dialogue, and through the election of six of the 14 members of the OCLC Board of Trustees.

Regional Councils facilitate connections, organised in three areas: 1. Americas Regional Council (ARC) 2. Europe, the Middle East and Africa Regional Council (EMEA) 3. Asia Pacific Regional Council (APRC) Members from each region elect delegates to serve on the OCLC Global Council. These elected library leaders represent the diversity of our membership and are your voice and direct connection to the cooperative, providing insights and feedback on issues at the local, regional and national levels. Voting for your region’s delegates is a key way to be involved and to have your voice heard.
