Woven Washi Tape Notebook Issue #8

a Crafting Connections Mini-Magazine

Crafting with little ones is lovely, but sometimes, grown-ups need to do a little making of their own. In order to live creative lives with our little ones, we need to take time to recharge our own creative batteries from time-to-time. This woven washi-tape notebook is the perfect project for busy grown-ups. It only takes about 10-minutes from start-to-finish to make each one. It is simple to do, but has enough options that you can make a notebook that is truly one-of-a-kind, something perfectly you. Then, once your notebook is finished, the possibilities are endless for what to put inside - grocery lists, sketches, dreams, silly quotes from your little ones. It’s up to you!

WHAT TO DO Prepare the washi tape for weaving., Cut your drinking straws into 1-inch chunks. Wind lengths of washi tape onto the straw pieces, each length of washi tape should be about two inches longer than the notebook. Trim the edges of the straw so that they are just a touch wider than the tape. Start weaving. Affix the washi tape to the bottom and side of your notebook (step one), tape the ends to the inside cover. Move your tape, slowly unwinding it from the straw, bit-by-bit as you weave one washi tape under and over the other (step two and three). When you’ve finished weaving, continue the washi tape path to the top or back of the cover. Fold the ends of the tape and affix them to the inside of the cover to secure it in place.

WITH LITTLE ONES While it is truly lovely to take 10 quiet minutes alone to create, those 10-minutes can be hard to come by. If you’d like to include your little one in this project, there is no reason they can’t make their own notebook. Washi tape is thin and easy for little ones to tear, or if they are confident with a scissors they can use that too!

Washi tape is a high-quality masking tape made from Japanese rice paper. One city in Japan, Mino, is particularly famous for their washi. This lantern, made entirely from washi, was one on display during a festival entirely devoted to celebrating it.
