COACHING STAFF COLIN INGLIS HEAD COACH Colin Inglis has made a major impact on the cross country and track and field programs in his 13 years as a head coach at York University. Now in his 14th season, he is continuing to push both the cross country and track and field teams to new heights. Since his arrival in 1999, Inglis has produced 113 OUA all-stars and 40 all-Canadians in cross country and track and field, and studentathletes on his teams have broken several meet, school and national records. Inglis is a two-time recipient of the Bob Vigars Award as OUA men’s track and field coach of the year (2007, 2009) and received the Sue Wise Award as OUA women’s track and field coach of the year in 2003.

Inglis also served as Power Speed Coach for Canada at the 1999 Pan-American Junior Championships in Florida, the 2000 under-21 NACAC in Mexico, the 2001 Francophone Games in Ottawa and the 2002 under-21 NACAC in Texas. As an athlete, Inglis was a three-time all-Canadian, 1992 MVP of the York track and field team and a New Brunswick team representative at the 1989 and 1994 Francophone Games. Inglis graduated from York University with a bachelor of science in Kinesiology & Health Science in 1992 and continued his education at the University of Maine, receiving a bachelor of education in 1994. In addition to his coaching duties, Inglis serves as a practicum teacher in York’s School of Kinesiology & Health Science.

A Level 3 NCCP coach in the sprints, hurdles and jumps, Inglis is working toward his Level 4 certification. Before coming to York, Inglis served as an associate head coach at the University of Windsor, where he helped lead the Lancers to three OUA track and field titles and two CIS women’s track and field championships in 1996 and 1999.

JENNA BELL ASSISTANT COACH Jenna Bell joined the Lions coaching staff for the 2012-13 season as the full-time assistant coach. She takes over for Colleen Dotson, who is away on a year-long maternity leave. Bell comes to York from the University of Toronto, where she has been the junior development coach for hurdles and jumps since 2008. She is also a secondary school teacher with the Toronto District School Board and, in addition to teaching math and science curriculums, coaches cross country and track and field. Previously, she has also served as a camp coordinator and instructor at the University of Toronto and an assistant coach with the Ontario Youth Legion Team. For the 2010-11 season, she had 22 student-athletes qualify for the OFSAA championships, where they won one gold and two bronze medals, and seven advance to the youth and junior national championships.

2

Bell was also a varsity student-athlete herself, winning a bronze medal in the pentathlon at the OUA championships in 2008 while competing for the University of Waterloo Warriors. She is a three-time academic all-Canadian and was a nationallevel heptathlete for three years.

ASSISTANT COACHES ANTHONY D’AGOSTINO - SPRINTS Anthony D’Agostino joined the Lions coaching staff in 2011 to assist with one of the team’s strongest groups, its sprinters. He is currently the track and field coach at Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School in Toronto, a role he has held since 1986, and he is also the head of the physical education department, which he took over in 2003. The school’s track and field program has won numerous medals at the TDCAA and OFSAA championships in the last 10 years, most recently the girl’s team title in 2008. In addition to coaching track and field, he is the sport’s convenor for the TDCAA and OFSAA championships and has also been a junior girls hockey coach at a number of different levels. A multi-sport athlete himself who played for the University of Toronto football team and then in the Canadian Italian Hockey League, D’Agostino is a certified NCCP Level II coach and an NCCP instructor for Level I coaching.

MILT OTTEY - HIGH JUMP Milt Ottey, now in his fifth year with the York University track and field team, brings a wealth of national and international experience to the Lions program. A former Canadian record holder in the high jump at 2.33m who was ranked the No. 1 high jumper in the world in 1982, Ottey has competed in several international events. He won back-to-back gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 and 1986 and a bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. He also finished in sixth place at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. He has previously coached at UTEP, Kent State and the University of New Mexico. In addition to his work with the Lions, Ottey is currently the development manager for the very popular UK-based kids core skills development program entitled “International Fun and Team Athletics” in Canada.

RICHARD PARKINSON - THROWS Richard Parkinson is now in his sixth year as an assistant coach with the Lions track and field team, specializing in the throwing events. In his five years with the Lions, Parkinson has developed three CIS champions, seven CIS all-Canadians and 13 OUA all-stars. In 2012 the Lions won seven of a possible 12 OUA throws medals and six of 12 medals at the CIS championships. A former thrower himself, Parkinson has seen national team duty as both an athlete and a coach. A certified NCCP Level 3 coach in the throwing events, he participated in Athletics Canada’s national coaching mentor program in 2012 and was the throws coach for the 2012 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) under-23 championships in Guanajuato, Mexico. Parkinson’s coaching career has included stints as a volunteer coach at the University of Buffalo, Clemson University and North Central College. He is also the throws coach for the York University Track Club. Parkinson, who graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor of arts degree in advertising and marketing, is a full-time senior marketing executive.

ARYE ROSENOER - POLE VAULT Arye Rosenoer is the pole vault coach at York and has overseen the development of several top pole vaulters, including former Lion, Heather Hamilton, a two-time CIS and OUA champion in the event who currently also holds the CIS and OUA meet records and the school record. Before coming to York, he spent six seasons at the University of Toronto. In addition to his work with Hamilton, Rosenoer works with some of this country’s elite pole vaulters, such as Jason Wurster and Dana Ellis, and has guided many of his athletes at international competitions around the world.

JOHN STEVENSON - DISTANCE John Stevenson joined the Lions as the distance specialist for the 2012-13 season. He brings with him extensive experience as a distance coach and was most recently with the London Western Track and Field Club, where he’s been the president since 2008 and coaching since 2006. He also has a wealth of experience with several provincial and national teams. This past March he served as a Canadian team coach for the 2012 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, and last year he was the endurance coordinator for the Athletics Ontario Canada Summer Games development program. He has previously been the middle distance coach for the Athletics Ontario vs. Quebec dual meet and at the 2010 Ontario Summer Games. A Level 3 middle distance coach working on completing his Level 4/5 at the National Coaching Institute of Toronto, Stevenson was a CIS competitor at the University of British Columbia, where he was a three-time Canada West champion in the 4x800m relay.

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW The York University Lions track and field team is gearing up for its biggest meet of the season and will be in Edmonton later this week to compete against the best student-athletes from across the country at the 2013 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Track and Field Championships. The national meet gets underway at the Universiade Pavilion at the University of Alberta on Thursday (March 7) and continues for three days. The Lions’ contingent this year includes 25 student-athletes (six women, 19 men). At the CIS meet last year the Lions men finished in fourth place with 72 points, 22 more than the previous season and just 1.5 out of the bronze medal position. The women, meanwhile, were eighth with 35 points, 25 more than in 2011. Daniel Novia (Mississauga, Ont.) is the reigning weight throw champion and the favourite entering the event again this year. He won the OUA gold medal two weeks ago with a season-best throw of 20.66 metres, just eight centimetres shy of the meet record he set in 2012, and no other competitor has come within one metre of that distance this season. Teammate Eric Brathwaite (Brampton, Ont.) will be looking for his first medal at the CIS championships and is seeded third heading into the weight throw competition with a season-best distance of 18.63 metres. He is coming off a bronze-medal showing at the OUA championships in late February.

medal should come down to the two of them as no other competitor has cleared a height greater than 4.81 metres. Vince DiBacco (Woodbridge, Ont.) will also compete in the pole vault. He has a season-best height of 4.50 metres and is seeded 12th, and will be looking for redemption after not recording a height at the OUA championships. Also in the field, triple jumpers Richard Jansen (Bradford, Ont.) and Dahn Pratt (Teaneck, N.J.) will be seeking a spot on the podium. Jansen finished sixth last year and is seeded fifth this season, while Pratt qualified for the CIS championships by winning the silver medal at the OUA meet with a jump of 13.78 metres. Jansen missed competing in his best event at the provincial championships as he was nursing an injury, but he is healed and looking to surprise the field this weekend. On the track, Andrew Heaney (Scarborough, Ont.) and Ryan Charlton (Whitby, Ont.) will compete in individual events. Both of them will run in the 600m and Heaney will also be in the 1000m. Personal-best runs by Heaney could land him on the podium in either race as he is seeded fifth in the 600m and eighth in the 1000m, and is coming off a tremendous fourthplace result in the OUA championships in the longer distance. Charlton, meanwhile, is ranked 12th in the 600m.

Another thrower looking for his first CIS medal is Umar Khan (Markham, Ont.), who will compete in the shot put and is seeded third in the event. He just missed the podium last year with a fourth-place finish and recently won the bronze medal in the event at the OUA meet.

Two women will also compete in individual events on the track, Tameran Defreitas (Barrie, Ont.) and Kelsey Desjarlais (Maple Ridge, B.C.). Defrietas, a rookie competing in her first CIS championship, will run the 60m after a personal-best time of 7.69 seconds in the event at the OUA championships. Desjarlais is entered in the 600m after an impressive race at the OUA meet that earned her the final spot in the CIS field.

Novia, Brathwaite and rookie Anojan Sivalingam (Scarborough, Ont.) will also compete in the shot put and are seeded sixth, eighth and 11th, respectively, while Chris Preece (Cookstown, Ont.) will make his second straight appearance in the weight throw competition. He finished 10th in 2012.

The Lions will also be entered in four relay events. On the women’s side, Defreitas, Desjarlais, Mercy Bera (Winnipeg), Allison Gallaugher (Surrey, B.C.) and Sheereen Harris (Toronto) will run in the 4 x 200m relay and are seeded 12th.

The Lions could also pick up medals in the women’s throwing events as Cynthia Appiah (Etobicoke, Ont.) is seeded first in the weight throw and second in the shot put heading into the championships. She won silver medals in both events last year and has four total CIS medals to her credit, with another silver and a bronze won in 2010. Appiah finished third in both events at the OUA championships two weeks ago.

The men will compete in all three relay events. Running in the 4 x 200m relay are Ayo Agusto (Toronto), Evander Cobbold (Toronto), Wesley Huff (Elliot Lake, Ont.), Birko Montinat (Toronto) and Judah Osagie (Ekpoma, Nigeria). Agusto, Charlton, Cobbold, Heaney and Montinat are entered in the 4 x 400m, and Charlton, Heaney, Muad Issa (Mississauga, Ont.), Harishan Karunenthiran (Brampton, Ont.) and Chris Pallotta (Etobicoke, Ont.) will run in the 4 x 800m.

Like Novia, pole vaulter David McKay (Victoria) is the favourite heading into the CIS meet. Last season’s OUA rookie of the year has won OUA gold medals in the event in each of his first two years and is looking to improve upon the seventh-place finish he posted in 2012. McKay’s season-best height is 5.02 metres, which is just two centimetres higher than Saskatchewan’s Lane Britnell, who is the defending CIS champion. This year’s gold
