JUNE 1 | JOHN 5:31-47 | THE POOL AT BETHESDA, PART 3
THE WITNESS OF THE FATHER | JOHN 5:37-38 o o
Having claimed He was the Son of God, Jesus now refers to five witnesses HIS PERSONAL WITNESS | JOHN 5:31-32 o o o
Jesus has already claimed that He is the Son of God (John 5:17-18). This testimony is not sufficient nor would it stand in a Jewish court (Deuteronomy 19:15). Is there a contradiction between John 5:31 and John 8:14? In 5:31, Jesus is calling for legal verification In 8:14 Jesus is not calling for legal verification, but states that He has such testimony if needed.
THE WITNESS OF JOHN THE BAPTIST | JOHN 5:33-35 o
o
John gave the clearest human proclamation of the identity of Jesus that had been given to this point: I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God (John 1:34) John’s witness was only a witness to the light, he was not the Light (John 1:8)
THE WITNESS OF JESUS’ WORKS | JOHN 5:36 o
John’s Gospel gives seven signs which testify to Jesus as the Messiah— Water to wine – John 2:1-11 Healing of the Nobleman’s son – John 4:46-54 Healing of the paralytic at Bethesda – John 5:1-18 Feeding of the 5,000 – John 6:5-14 Walking on Water – John 6:16-24
Healing of the man born blind – John 9:1-7 Raising of Lazarus – John 11:1-45 No indication that his enemies ever denied the factual nature of these works, but they did attempt to attribute them to demons (John 8:48). Rabbinical material condemned Jesus as sorcerer but never as fraudulent. Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus of Lydda, around 95AD, claimed Jesus participated in “magic arts.”
o
Jesus claimed to be the special object of the Father’s love – 5:20 Jesus claimed to be the administrator of the Father’s judgment – 5:2227 The Voice of God testified to Jesus at His baptism and at the last week of His life (John 12:23)
THE WITNESS OF SCRIPTURE | JOHN 5:39-47 o
o o
o
In the Bible, the word “Scripture” is always a reference to the written word of God. 2 Peter 1:20 warns that it is not open to “one’s own interpretation.” Scripture is far more than a book of ethics, it is a book of Messianic hope, which is why the Jewish people were searching the Scriptures. If we do not accept the message of the Scriptures about Christ, we will accept the message of Satan, by default (v. 43) There is no deliverance without the Messiah. If we refuse to follow the Scripture to the Person they point to, we will not have eternal life. The Baptist statement which lead to theological crisis is creeping back in to Southern Baptist life: the criterion by which the Bible is to be interpreted is Jesus Christ.
