Welcome Home. By Ben Crismon White Hall United Methodist
Being a pastor who is always trying to grow the church and build the Kingdom of God, I am always looking at new strategies and buzzwords to use to grab people’s attention. I have noticed that many churches use words like “family” and “home”. We want to describe our churches as loving places that are comfortable and warm. Places where you can truly be yourself and feel the love of God. I won’t speak to the fact that churches are
also called to be mission stations, schools, counseling centers, and much more, I just want to speak to why we use words like “home” and “family” I think we do this because deep inside of us all, we have a fear that we are not welcome, that we won’t be accepted. We fear that if people really found out about who we were, and the awful thoughts that went through our mind from time to time, that we would no longer be loved. We are afraid that we won’t be accepted in this life or the life after death. And
this fear causes us to seek attention and affection in each other, instead of finding our value in God. We try to manipulate ourselves and our behavior, hoping to be liked and appreciated, rather than being the person God created us to be. But Jesus offers us an alternative. Throughout the Gospels we see Jesus welcoming us into a relationship with God, preparing rooms for us in His Father’s house, making a way for us to draw close to our God. Jesus’ life and ministry boldly proclaim that all are welcome, regard-
less of who we are, not only in this life, but in the life everlasting. We may struggle to feel welcome in our own circles of family and friends, but we should always know that God is ready to welcome us home again. So go home friends, the doors are wide open and God is ready to welcome you home.
