God Alone Is Our Savior. By Stephen Harrison Senior Pastor, Family Church
I love how the framers of our nation formed our government. One great system is the formation of our three branches of government. The executive, judicial, and legislative branches provide the necessary process and accountability to ensure no one branch has unequal power. That is, if these systems are followed correctly. But did you know the checks and balance system came from Scripture? Isaiah 33:22 says, "For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is He who will save us." While I believe in the governmental system of a Constitutional Republic, I do not think the government is my savior. God alone is the Supreme Justice, the Ultimate Lawgiver, and the most Righteous King. He alone is the savior of the universe! Let's look at those three statements as they originally
apply to God. First, The Lord is our Judge. For whatever reason, most of us have stood before a judge or have had a judge act on our behalf. Perhaps you've never stood before a judge. Did you know everyone will one day stand before God the Judge to give an account for your life? Romans 14:10 says, "We will all stand before God's Judgment seat." There are two judgments in Scripture. The Great White Throne Judgment is for nonChristians (Revelation 20:1115). Only those not saved by Christ will be there, the only verdict will be guilty, and the only sentence will be death, or eternal separation from God in a literal and eternal place called Hell. The other judgment will be the Bema seat or the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10). This is only for Christians and is a time of receiving rewards for what we've done on earth. This isn't a reward for earning salvation by our works as Salvation comes only by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). We
are not the judge. God alone is the Judge of both based on what we do with Jesus. God is also our lawgiver. Lawmakers make good and bad laws (way too many in my opinion). While some things are legal (like abortion), they are not right. God alone determines what is right and wrong, not people. If we love Him, we will obey his commandments (John 14:15). People have a history of doing right in their own eyes (Judges 21:25) but there is a way that seems right to us but ends in destruction and death (Proverbs 14:12). Our ways may seem right but Scripture says the wise listen to advice (Proverbs 12:15). The best advice we could ever adhere to is that of God and His Word. He alone is wise (Jude 1:25). If we truly want to know right and wrong we must read God's Word because He has already spoken on it. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteous-
ness." The Lord is also our King. He alone is the most supreme and powerful! 1 Timothy 6:13-16 reminds us He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He alone is immortal! Many kings have come and gone but only God remains and reigns supreme! Revelation 19:16 tells us, "On His robe and on His thigh he has this name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords." His Kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36) and this world is not the Christian's ultimate home. Isaiah 33:22 says Jesus is the king, lawgiver, and judge but He is also Savior! Others may judge, rule, and make laws but only Jesus saves! Remember, Acts 4:12 says, "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved." If you'll recognize and submit to Jesus as your savior then the other three (King, Lawmaker, and Judge) will fall into place.
