My Favorite Time Of Year. By Ben Crismon White Hall United Methodist
Christmas is easily my favorite time of year. I love decorating the house, cutting down the tree, putting up lights, going to Ugly Sweater parties (mine is spectacularly atrocious), and spending time with family. And I can’t forget about the food! The warm cider, the Chex mix, the Coca-Cola Ham, dressing, green bean bundles. It is simply a special time of year. It is a time of year that has only gotten more special with my life in ministry. As a Pastor, I have really come to appreciate the season of Ad-
vent, this time of preparation and expectation as we await the arrival of the Christchild. It was in this mindset that this commercial from Kohl’s really stuck out to me. As you might have read in previous blogs both Beer Ads and Car Ads have really hit the nail on the head, and have provided us with great food for thought. When Mary showed me this commercial, I was taken aback by the kindness of the young people, their willingness to make the life of someone else better. But really it was the tagline at the end that really caught my attention. It says “Expect great
things”. Isn’t that what the whole season of Advent is about? Expecting great things. I certainly think so, and while decorating the tree, dining with family, and opening presents are all amazing things, there is something even better to expect. The best thing. The arrival of God incarnate: Emmanuel, God with us. This Advent season is a time to expect great things. A time to expect God to take our brokenness and make us whole. A time to expect our sins to be forgiven and grace to be poured. A time to expect the unconditional love of a creator and savior to
change our lives forever. A time to expect the opportunities to share that love, and grace, and transformation with others. Those are truly great things to expect. So get ready, start watching, and be alert. Expect great things. I think we will all be amazed by what God does this Advent season. I have yet to be disappointed.
