WSU OPEN INDOOR TRACK & FIELD MEET SET FOR JAN. 19-20 Washington State University’s 16th Annual WSU Indoor Open takes place Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20, in the Indoor Facility on the Pullman campus…teams from Gonzaga, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Whitworth, Spokane CC, Central Washington, Lewis-Clark State, Puget Sound, Linfield, will join the Cougars at this meet...WSU Indoor Facility’s Mondo track features racing on a 60m straightaway, and a 200m oval…jumping and throwing field events are contested on the turf inside the oval…weight throws, triple jumps and women’s pole vault take place Fri., Jan. 19...remaining field events and all running events begin Saturday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m...no late entries will be accepted...spectators are admitted without charge for all WSU Track & Field competition in 2018...no live stats and no webcast...results will be posted at www.wsucougars.com, following the meet’s completion. WAYNE PHIPPS, DIR. OF WSU CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD Wayne Phipps (University of British Columbia ‘91) is in his fourth season with the Washington State track and field program...Phipps led the Cougar men’s cross country program back-to-back-to-back NCAA Championships at-large berth appearances...Cougs finished 21st in 2017, 14th in 2016 - the highest in 32 years, and 26th in 2015....in track and field seasons, mentored studentathletes to WSU top-ten performances 24 times in the indoor season and 47 times in the outdoor season....there have also been conference all-academic honors awarded to WSU student-athletes 51 times in cross country, 88 times in indoor track and 86 times in outdoor track...Phipps became the 15th men’s coach and the second coach for the combined men’s and women’s program at WSU on July 1, 2014, after 19 years at the University of Idaho...while at Idaho, Phipps was honored 14 times as a conference coach of the year and led the Vandals to a record 16 conference titles.

WSU HIGHLIGHTS FROM ED JACOBY INVITATIONAL AND UW INDOOR PREVIEW WSU T&F teams split squads Jan. 12-13 for Boise State’s Ed Jacoby Invite and UW Indoor Preview...at Nampa, Aoife Martin won the 20# weight throw with a four-foot PR and eighth-best in WSU history of 17.19m/56-4 3/4...Brock Eager won the 35# weight throw at 19.86m/65-2, and Amani Brown was the men’s WT runner-up with a five-foot PR of 17.53m/57-6 1/4...Ja’Maun Charles won the men’s 60m (6.79) and 200m (21.72)...Zach Smith was the runner-up in both with a 60m time of 6.89 and a 200m PR time of 21.73...freshman Brandon Bains was fourth in the 60m (6.99) and third in the 200m (21.98)...also winning Jake Ulrich in the 400m (48.95), Nick Johnson in the 60m hurdles (PR 7.98) and the 4x400m relay of Christapherson Grant, Corey Allen, Cody Kjarmo and Ulrich (3:19.52)....Stephanie Cho won the women’s 400m (PR 56.35)...highlights from Seattle included Molly Scharmann tied for fourth in the pole vault (3.91m/12-10), freshman Kiyena Beatty 12th in the mile (5:08.39), Natalie Ackerley fourth in the 800m (2:16.53), Grace Victor sixth in the 800m (2:16.10), and Josie Brown 32nd in the 3000m (10:12.46)...for the WSU men, Keelan Halligan was fourth in the high jump (2.00m/6-6 3/4), frosh Beau Sheeran was eighth in the high jump (1.90m/6-2), frosh Zach Stallings was fifth in the 800m (1:55.71), John Whelan was 17th in the mile (4:11.24), and Paul Ryan was 18th in the 3000m (8:23.43).
