1. MEN OF THE NEW TESTAMENT You will learn about Lazarus. You will learn about Thomas. You will learn about Stephen. You will learn how God helped these men.
Lazarus (John 11:1–44) Mary and Martha were sisters. Lazarus was their brother. They were friends of Jesus. Jesus would stay at their home. They loved Jesus. One day, Lazarus became very sick. Mary and Martha were worried! Jesus was in another town.

Mary asked Jesus to come to her house. She wanted Jesus to heal her brother. Lazarus died. Mary and Martha were very sad. They cried. Jesus heard about Lazarus. He went to Mary and Martha’s house. He saw many friends crying. Jesus was very sad. Jesus wept. Jesus went to where Lazarus was buried. Jesus prayed to God. He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus come forth.” Lazarus came out. Lazarus was alive! Jesus made Lazarus alive!

Thomas (John 20:24–31) Thomas was a friend of Jesus. Thomas saw Lazarus. Thomas saw Jesus do miracles. Thomas listened to Jesus. He followed Jesus. He was a disciple of Jesus. Thomas was sad when Jesus died on the cross. He thought Jesus was gone. The disciples told Thomas that they saw Jesus. Thomas did not believe the disciples. He said he needed to see Jesus. He said he needed to touch Jesus.

The disciples were in a room. The doors were locked. Jesus came into the room. The disciples were surprised! Thomas saw the scars on Jesus’s hands. Thomas said to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas believed that Jesus was alive! Some people call Thomas “Doubting Thomas.” The word doubt means to not believe or not be sure. Do you think that “Doubting Thomas” is a good name for Thomas?

Stephen loved God. He believed that Jesus died for him. He was God’s friend. Stephen told the people about Jesus. Some people thought that Stephen looked like an angel. God helped him do miracles. Some men did not like Stephen. They did not like what he said about God. They decided to hurt Stephen. The men threw stones at Stephen. Stephen was not afraid. He knew that God was with him.
