The Indiana men’s tennis returns home riding a five-match winning streak and will host Vincennes University on March 25 at 12 p.m. The Hoosiers won five matches in six days during their spring break trip to Florida. Indiana, which had played every match indoors up to that point in the season, made the transition to the outdoor courts a smooth one with the victories. Indiana will host Vincennes for the second straight season after defeating the Blazers, 7-0, in Bloomington a season ago.

SCOUTING VINCENNES Vincennes enters the match with a 7-2 overall record. In their last outing, the Blazers shared the Kerry Seward Invitational Tournament with Oberlin College on March 19. In claiming the title, Vincennes won the top three singles flights, as well as the top two doubles. Freshmen Marius Tagen and Renato Costa play No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively for the Blazers. Those two, along with freshman David Jackson, claimed singles titles in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 flights at the tournament. The Blazers are coached by Ron Albers. He has been at the institution for 25 years and holds a record of 550-134. Indiana and Vincennes met last season with the Hoosiers claiming a 7-0 victory on March 21. Seniors Dmytro Ishtuganov and Neil Kenner along with junior David Bubenicek all claimed singles victories in the win for IU.

MAGICAL NO. 300 In his 21st season as the Hoosier head coach, Ken Hydinger join a list of elite Hoosier leader with his 300th win at the institution. By virtue of IU’s 5-0 victory over Colgate on March 13, Hydinger joined a list that includes Bob Morgan (baseball), Bob Knight (men’s basketball), Lin Loring (women’s tennis), Jerry Yeagley (men’s soccer), Diane Stephenson (softball), Ernie Andres (baseball) and Branch McCracken (men’s basketball) as one of only eight head coaches to win 300 games at IU. "I have been blessed in many ways during my time here at IU," Hydinger said. "Some of those great memories were being around some elite coaches. I've been blessed to be in a good place and to have had some great competitors on my teams." MCLOUGHLIN STREAKING Sophomore Dara McLoughlin has been one of the hottest Hoosier players over the last few weeks. During the Hoosiers’ spring break trip, the Dublin, Ireland native went a perfect 5-0 to run his season-long and team-long winning streak to seven matches. With the streak, he has moved into a tie with sophomore Michael McCarthy and junior David Bubenicek for the most singles victories on the team with 16.

Prior to spring break, McLoughlin knocked off the No. 60-ranked Brett Helgeson of Notre Dame in three sets. After dropping the first set, he rallied to win the final two over Helgeson for IU’s lone point against Notre Dame. During the spring break trip, McLoughlin claimed his first victory at the No. 1 singles positions, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3, over Chris Innes of Colgate. The win not only was a milestone for McLoughlin, but helped the Hoosiers claim head coach Ken Hydinger’s 300th win at the IU headman. McLoughlin rallied on a pair of occasions to claim the winning point in IU’s 4-3 victory over South Florida. With the match even at three, McLoughlin rallied from a set-down and then fought of several matchpoints on his way to claiming a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2) win over Marc Jaegers.

THREE SETS TO HOOSIERS’ LIKING Sophomore Dara McLoughlin has had success when forcing matches to three sets. After dropping his opening match of the season in three sets, McLoughlin has won his last eight matches when taking the match to a deciding set. In fact, six of those eight victories were of the comefrom-behind persuasion. From Feb. 26 through March 15, the Dublin, Ireland native claimed five consecutive matches in three sets. McLoughlin is not the only Hoosier to find success when matches go to three sets. Senior Dymtro Ishtuganov and sophomore Michael McCarthy have each claimed a quartet of three-set victories, while senior Neil Kenner and freshman Peter Antons have a pair a piece.

SWEEPING SPRING BREAK The Hoosiers swept through the spring break schedule claiming five victories in six days. IU opened with a 6-1 victory over a tough North Florida team to open the trip on March 13. North Florida played then-No. 5 Mississippi tough a week earlier, falling 5-2 with two other singles matches going to three sets. Indiana then notched head coach Ken Hydinger’s 300th career victory as the Hoosier coach with a 5-0 victory over a short-handed Colgate squad later in the day on March 13. The Hoosiers used a different lineup that included singles victories by sophomore Dara McLoughlin at No. 1 and junior Arnaud Roussel at No. 2 in garnering the team victory. IU finished off the trip with wins over Army (6-1), South Florida (4-3) and Central Florida (5-2). The Hoosiers swept the doubles against Army and then won five of six singles positions to garner the win. Against South Florida, IU needed a pair of rallying three-set victories by the sophomore tandem of Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin to surge past the Bulls. Indiana rounded out the trip with five of six singles points in the victory over Central Florida.

PERFECT SPRING PERFORMANCES Sophomore Dara McLoughlin and junior Arnaud Roussel both compiled impressive 5-0 marks during the Hoosiers spring break trip to Florida. The pair played in every match for the Hoosiers, including moving up from their traditional spots against a short-handed Colgate team. With the victories, Roussell snapped a personal five-match losing streak and improved to 7-5 on the season. McLoughlin upped his overall record to 16-11 on the campaign. Against Colgate on March 13, McLoughlin moved up to the No. 1 singles position, while Roussel jumped up to the No. 2 slot.

CHANCES AT 20 WINS In 2004-05, only two Hoosiers reached the 20-win plateau in singles. That number has a chance to double in 2005-06. With four players at either 15 or 16 victories, the Hoosiers have a chance to have their most 20-match winners since the 1999-00 season. In fact, the Hoosiers had five

players with 20 or more singles victories during that season. Sophomores Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin along with junior David Bubenicek lead the team with 16 wins on the year, while senior Dmytro Ishtuganov has 15 wins while playing at the No. 1 singles position.

KNOCKING OFF THE RANKED

After beginning the season as the Hoosiers’ No. 4 singles player, junior David Bubenicek moved up to the No. 2 position and notched IU’s lone point with a straight sets victory against Ball State on Feb. 19. The Czech Republic native has an overall singles mark of 16-7, including a 10-5 mark during the spring season. He started the spring dualmatch season at the No. 4 singles position before moving up to No. 3. He is 3-0 at the No. 4 position and 3-1 at the No. 3 slot. His 16 wins are tied for the team lead with senior Dmytro Ishutganov and Michael McCarthy, while his 10 dual-match victories top the team. Bubenicek entered the campaign as the lone returning player with 20 or more singles victories last season. He racked up a 21-7 singles mark, including a 7-3 Big Ten ledger as a junior. He played primarily at the No. 3 singles with a 9-3 mark in that slot.

Sophomore Dara McLoughlin highlighted the Hoosier effort against then-No. 18 Notre Dame with his second victory over a nationally-ranked foe this season. After falling in the first set, 6-1, McLoughlin fought back to take the second, 6-4, over No. 60 Brett Helgeson. The Dublin, Ireland native broke Helgeson to take a 5-3 lead. The ND player returned the favor and broke back to get on serve trailing 5-4. McLoughlin would not be outdone, as he broke Helgeson for the second straight time to claim a 6-4 second-set win. In the third and deciding set, McLoughlin was down a break early, but responded by winning four straight points to build 5-2 cushion. He served out the match for the 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. McLoughlin evened his mark against ranked opponents at 2-2. Earlier in the year, he defeated then-No. 115 Marc Spicijaric of Illinois at the ITA Midwest Regional.

The Hoosiers added junior Arnaud Roussel and freshman Tetta Oyama to the roster for the spring season. The pair adds more international flare to an already diverse IU roster. Roussel is a native of Bordeaux, France, while Oyama is from Shizuoka, Japan. Roussel competed in the Hoosiers’ season-opening doubleheader sweep of Butler and Bradley. He won at the No. 6 singles position against the Bulldogs before winning in straight sets against the Braves at No. 5. Roussel transferred to Indiana after spending two-and-a-half seasons at Mississippi State. He amassed an 11-11 record during those seasons with the Bulldogs. Roussel saw his most extensive action during his freshman campaign in which he played at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. He

rallied from a set down in Mississippi State’s first round NCAA Tournament victory over Wake Forest to clinch the match in 2004. The Frenchman was the junior champion of the Aquitanie Region in France and lists Pete Sampras and Juan-Carlos Ferrero as his favorite tennis players. Oyama was one of the top junior players in Japan. The freshman ranked as high as No. 3 in junior singles and No. 2 in junior doubles during the 2003 season in his native country. In 2005, he ranked as high as No. 187 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Combined Junior Rankings, which combines a player’s performance in doubles and singles while promoting doubles play junior players. He captured the singles title at the Hong Kong ITF Junior Tournament in January 2005. Oyama was a doubles finalist at the Neway International Junior Championships in January 2005 and at the China International Junior Championships in September 2004. He also advanced to the semifinals in singles at the 2005 BKSP International Junior Championships. Oyama lists Carlos Moya, Gustavo Kuerten and Andre Agassi as his favorite tennis players.
