Hoosiers Take on Pacific in Home Opener After a four-game road trip with Appalachian State and Wake Forest, the Hoosier field hockey team returns to Bloomington for its home opener against the 2004 NorPac Champion, the Pacific Tigers. The Hoosiers are coming off a 1-0 win over Appalachian State. In Boone, senior captain Lesley Wiler scored the game’s only goal off an assist from junior Morgan Miller and sophomore Amanda Oyler. IU outshot the Tigers 26-3 with 14 of those shots on goal. Indiana also had the advantage in penalty corners. The Hoosiers totaled 10 corners to ASU’s 2. Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner tallied one save in the win. The Hoosiers then made their way to Winston-Salem to take on the three-time defending national champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons. With IU down 3-0 at the half, the Hoosiers hung tough and raised the score to 3-2. Scoring for IU was Wiler off an assist from sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen and Miller off a penalty corner. Meeuwsen and sophomore Meredith Brown had the assists on Indiana’s second goal. Despite 11 saves from Exner and a strong second half, the Demon Deacons took the 4-2 win. IU will face Pacific in the two teams’ first ever meeting. Pacific is one of three new additions to the Hoosiers’ schedule in 2005.

The Robertson File
Pacific is coming off of an 11-10 season including being crowned the NorPac Conference champion. The Tigers return six starters including juniors Vianney Campos, who registered 14 goals last season, and Michelle Manson who accounted for two goals, two assists and one defensive save.
Amy Robertson is in her sixth season at the helm of Hoosier field hockey. The 2004 season was a landmark year for Robertson and the Hoosiers. Their 12-8 final record was the best in school history and the program’s first winning season since reinstated in 2000. Robertson earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2003 after leading the Hoosiers to the most wins in school history at that point. Robertson also has extended the Hoosiers’ success to the classroom. In 2004, eight players were named to the National Field Hockey Association Division I National Academic Squad. The 2004 team also was recognized as a NFHCA National Academic Team for the program’s high cummulative G.P.A. Robertson also had a twelve members of her team earn Academic All-Big Ten recoginition. In her five years as a head coach, Robertson has coached 45 Academic AllBig Ten honorees and placed 39 on the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
Leading the Tigers in 2005 is junior Jennifer Chaney who has recorded eight points (two goals, four assists). Chaney has taken a team-high five shots on goal as well. Campos and Natalie Purcell have also notched two goals a piece for Pacific this season. Goalkeeper Valerie Niles has recorded 26 saves as of Sept. 5 for the Tigers. So far in 2005, the Tigers suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Delaware in overtime despite NorPac Player of the Week Campos’ two goals. In Pacific’s second game against Miami (Ohio), the Tigers posted their first shutout 2-0 win of the season. On Sept. 2 Pacific took on Syracuse and were victorious again, and Chaney tallied two goals. The following day the Tigers took another set-back with a 2-0 loss to Big Ten opponent, Michigan State. Against Iowa Pacific was thumped 8-1. The Tigers will face Louisville before heading to Bloomington to square off against the Hoosiers.

Hoosier Notables Hoosiers At Top of Big Ten
Bashore Named to National Team
The Indiana team can be found at or near the top in several categories in Big Ten standings.
For the first time in program history, a member of the Indiana field hockey team has been named to the USA National Field Hockey Team.
As of Sept. 5, the Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in shots with 79, nearly 20 more than the following team. Additionally, Indiana is the team Big Ten leader assists with 10. Junior Lydia Schrott finds herself at the top of three categories as well. Shrott leads the Big Ten in points with eight, goals with four and goals per game with four. Wiler and Frederique Meeuwsen share the leader slot in assists with two a piece. Kayla Bashore and Wiler share second in the standings in shots with 12. Additionally, Wiler sits in fourth in points per game with six.
California Connection After facing some tough competition from the east coast, the Hoosiers are taking on Pacific to see how they fair against teams from the west. The Hoosier roster boasts six players from California. Morgan Albini, Dani Castro, Haley Exner, April Levins, Caitlin Rhodes and Lesley Wiler all hail from Cali. Pacific’s forward Marissa Atilano is a former teammate of April Levins and Morgan Albini at Escondido’s San Pasqual High School.
Robertson Hits Benchmark The Hoosiers 1-0 win over Appalachian State on Sept. 2, head coach Amy Robertson has been a part of 200 wins as a coach. Between her times as an assistant at Iowa, UMass, Wake Forest and as a head coach at Indiana, Robertson has complied a 200-120 career record.
Wiler’s Weekend Senior captain Lesley Wiler had an impressive weekend for the Hoosiers. Wiler scored the only goal in the win over Appalachian State, and the following day, put IU on the board and started the Hoosier rally with another goal in the 39th minute against Wake Forest. Wiler’s two goals placed her second on the tam in goals scored and fourth in the Big Ten.
Senior Kayla Bashore has been added to the USA Women’s National Team roster. Bashore, who has tallied two points off one goal for the Hoosiers in 2005, played with the USA team in their five-game series against Canada. Along with starting for the Hoosiers, Bashore played with the National Team in Virginia Beach, Va. on Aug. 29 and started in the 1-1 tie on Aug. 31.
Schrott Earns Big Ten Honor Forward Lydia Schrott earned the Big Ten’s first Offensive Player of the Week award of 2005 for Aug. 29-Sept. 2. Schrott’s record-setting three goals in the Hoosiers 3-2 win over Northeastern on Aug. 28 gave Schrott her first Big Ten Player of the Week honor and the team’s second consecutive award, as teammate Frederique Meeuwsen claimed the position in the final 2004 Player of the Week on Nov. 1, 2004.
Schrott Shatters Records During Lydia Schrott’s outstanding performance on the field against Northeastern, Schrott broke several Indiana field hockey records. Schrott now sits as the leader in single-game goals scored with three, single-game points scored with six and is the career record holder in goals with 16, surpassing former Hoosier standout Erica Nilsson.

Hats Off Junior Lydia Schrott registered Indiana’s first hat trick in program history with her three goals in the 3-2 win over Northeastern on Aug. 28.
Summer Time Kayla Bashore, Morgan Miller and Lydia Schrott all took part in USA Field Hockey’s Elite Performance Training Canter’s national tournament in Virginia Beach, Va., this summer. The tournament ran from June 29-July 3 and included some of the nation’s top players. The Hoosier trio were members of the Midwest team who finished runner-up to the USA U21 team in overtime. Miller was the only Hoosier to put a point on the board in the tournament. She tallied one goal in the tournament’s third day of play against the South/Calif. team off a penalty corner shot. Bashore and Schrott also competed with the USA National Team who played Spain’s National Team. The U.S. squad fell 1-0.

In three 25minute periods, the Hoosiers out-scored the Ball State Cardinals, 3-0. Goals were tallied by sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen, senior Mallory Reabold and freshman Katie Kiper. Sophomores Kate O’Connell and Amanda Oyler and junior Lydia Schrott were credited with the assists. AUGUST 27, 2005 • INDIANA AT NEW HAMPSHIRE• DURHAM, N.C. • W, 3-1 DURHAM, N.H. – Indiana opened its 2005 season with a 3-1 win over the New Hampshire Wildcats on Saturday, Aug. 27. Seniors Kayla Bashore and Nikki Orciuch and junior Lydia Schrott tallied goals in the Hoosier win. Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner recorded save as IU improved its season-opener record to 3-3. Despite an impressive 19 saves from Wildcat goalkeeper, Margaux Shute, the hard-nosed Hoosiers were able to fire three goals past her for the win.
