Big Ten War Wages On The No. 8 Indiana field hockey team continues on its quest for the program’s first ever berth in the NCAA Tournament this weekend with Big Ten foe Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa. • The Hoosiers are riding a ten-game winning streak; the longest win steak by any Hoosier field hockey team in history. The Hoosiers’ 13 wins broke last year’s all-time season wins mark. As of Oct. 14, the Hoosiers have scored in 22 straight contests and are averaging 3.4 goals per game. • Along with Penn State, Indiana is the only unbeaten in the Big Ten. Both teams are tied for first with 4-0 records and have yet to play each other. • This season, Indiana is boasting one of the toughest defenses in the conference. In the last three outings, three Hoosiers have recorded defensive saves. Freshman Dani Castro, sophomore Erin Isler and junior Morgan Miller scored the first three non-goalkeeper saves of the year. • Both junior Lydia Schrott and senior Kayla Bashore have tied the single-season record in goals (10). Sophomore Meredith Brown needs three more assists to become the single-season assists leader. Hoosier seniors Lesley Wiler, Morgan Albini and Nikki Orciuch’s 71 career games placed the trio at the top of all-time games played. • Indiana continues to shatter program records. This year’s squad claimed the singleseason record for goals (47), assists (36) and shots (296) record. Indiana’s 13 wins makes the 2005 team the winningest field hockey team in history.

The Robertson File

The Iowa Hawkeyes are currently 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten and ranked No.11 in the Oct. 18 NFHCA Division I poll. Iowa has suffered losses from Wake Forest (8/27), North Carolina (8/28), Duke (9/17), Ohio State (9/25) and Penn State (10/8). The Hawkeyes were victorious over Northwestern and Michigan State in conference play.

Amy Robertson is in her sixth season at the helm of Hoosier field hockey. The 2004 season was a landmark year for Robertson and the Hoosiers. Their 12-8 final record was the best in school history and the program’s first winning season since reinstated in 2000. Robertson earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2003 after leading the Hoosiers to the most wins in school history at that point. Robertson also has extended the Hoosiers’ success to the classroom. In 2004, eight players were named to the National Field Hockey Association Division I National Academic Squad. The 2004 team also was recognized as a NFHCA National Academic Team for the program’s high cummulative G.P.A. Robertson also had a twelve members of her team earn Academic All-Big Ten recoginition. In her five years as a head coach, Robertson has coached 45 Academic AllBig Ten honorees and placed 39 on the NFHCA National Academic Squad.

Leading the Hawkeyes in scoring is Caitlin McCurdy with nine goals and six assists, followed by Debbie Birrell with eight and Lauren Pfeiffer with seven. In their 14 contests, Iowa has outscored opponents 45-25. Goalkeeper Lissa Munley has started every game for the Haweyes in goal. She currently has recorded 58 saves and holds a goals against average of 1.73.

Hoosier-Hawkeye Series The Hoosiers and the Hawkeyes have met five times with Iowa holding the 4-1 advantage in the series. Indiana is 1-1 in Iowa City going into Saturday’s matchup. IU’s only win over the Hawkeyes came on Oct. 31, 2003. Despite being underdogs, the Hoosiers prevailed 21 in double overtime. The last meeting between the two conference rivals was held on Sept. 26 in Bloomington. Lydia Schrott scored the Hoosiers’ only goal off an assist from Lesley Wiler and Mallory Reabold in the 4-1 loss. After 97 minutes of play, the Hoosiers improved their win streak to 10 with a 2-1 double-overtime thriller against No. 9 Ohio State. Led by goalkeeper Haley Exner’s career-high 16 saves, the victory increased Indiana’s longest Big Ten winning streak in program history to four games and broke the previous 12 game single-season record for most wins. Despite a scoreless first period, it was junior Morgan Miller who finally put the Buckeyes away off a penalty corner.

Five minutes into the second half, Ohio State got on the board when Lauren Kruse scored from the left side. Eleven minutes later, the Hoosiers answered when sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen netted her second score of the year when she poked the ball in from the front of the cage. Deadlocked at one at the conclusion of regulation and the first 15-minute overtime period, Miller connected on the Hoosiers’ only shot in overtime for the victory. The back from Gap, Pa., notched her fourth goal of the year off a penalty corner for Indiana’s second doubleovertime win of the year. Credited with the game-winning assist were sophomore Meredith Brown and junior Lydia Schrott.

Who’s Next? Indiana returns home for the final home stand of the year with Penn State on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. followed by Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Noon. All games are played in Mellencamp Pavilion.

Hoosier Notables Holding Steady

Bashore Named to National Team

For the first time in program history, the Indiana field hockey team cracked the top ten of the NFHCA rankings on Sept 27. For the past two weeks, the Hoosiers held steady at the No. 7 slot. The ranking was the highest in program history. Despite a win over No. 9 Ohio State the Hoosiers are in the No. 8 slot for the week of Oct. 17.

For the first time in program history, a member of the Indiana field hockey team has been named to the USA National Field Hockey Team.

Hawkeye Connection Indiana head coach Amy Robertson is no stranger to the Iowa field hockey program. Robertson’s first assistant coaching job was at Iowa from 1989-1991. In her three seasons with the Hawkeyes, the team complied an impressive 56-8-3 overall record, including three NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Final Four trips. Junior back Morgan Miller has an Iowa connection as well. Her sister, Lindsay lettered for the Hawkeyes from 2000-03. Lindsay Miller was named to the All-Region team in 2003 and second team All-Big Ten in both 2002 and 2003.

Re-Writing History Indiana’s record-breaking year continues as the 2005 Hoosiers keep shattering records. IU’s win over Ohio State (10/14) makes the 2005 squad the winningest team in program history (13). Additionally, this year’s team now holds the single-season record for most goals (47), assists (36), shots (296), goals per game (3.4), longest winning streak (10) and consecutive games with a goal (22). Individually, goalkeeper Haley Exner is the single-season leader in victories (13). Exner is only one win away from becoming the all-time career leader in wins. Additionally, after being credited with the assist on the game-winning goal, sophomore Meredith Brown is tied with junior Lydia Schrott and senior Lesley Wiler for the career assist leader (14).

Senior Kayla Bashore has been added to the USA Women’s National Team roster. Bashore, who has tallied two points off one goal for the Hoosiers in 2005, played with the USA team in their five-game series against Canada. Along with starting for the Hoosiers, Bashore played with the National Team in Virginia Beach, Va. on Aug. 29 and started in the 1-1 tie on Aug. 31.

Not Just a Face in the Crowd Senior Kayla Bashore was featured in Sept. 26 Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” for her performance so far this season and being the first player from IU to be named to the U.S. National Team.

There’s No Place Like Home In 2005 the Hoosiers are perfect at home. Indiana’s 6-0 record marks the longest home win streak in IU history. Furthermore, the Hoosiers have outscored opponents at home by a score of 28-6.

Hats Off Junior Lydia Schrott registered Indiana’s first hat trick in program history with her three goals in the 3-2 win over Northeastern on Aug. 28. The program and the season’s second ever hat trick was scored by Kayla Bashore on Friday, Sept. 9 win over Pacific. Bashore was the only player to score in the first half. Bashore, the program’s only two-time hat trick scorer. Against Lindenwood on Sept. 25, Bashore netted three consecutive goals in the first half for her second hat trick of her career and the program’s third.

Of the seven Big Ten schools that have field hockey programs, six are ranked in the top-15 and four of them can be found in the top 10 of the NFHCA poll. Indiana is the second highest nationally ranked team at No. 8 only behind Penn State at No. 6. Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan and Iowa can all be found near the top of this week’s NFHCA rankings.

Sharing the Ball Indiana currently is tied for first in the league in team assists with nine. IU had been at the top of the Big Ten in this catagory for four consecutive weeks. Eleven Hoosiers have recorded assists in 2005 with nine Indiana players scoring this season.

Senior Mallory Reabold had one of the best games in her career against Pacific on Sept. 9. Rabold tallied her first and second goals of the season against the Tigers and was credited with one assist in fellow senior Kayla Bashore’s second goal of the game.

In three 25minute periods, the Hoosiers out-scored the Ball State Cardinals, 3-0. Goals were tallied by sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen, senior Mallory Reabold and freshman Katie Kiper. Sophomores Kate O’Connell and Amanda Oyler and junior Lydia Schrott were credited with the assists. AUGUST 27, 2005 • INDIANA AT NEW HAMPSHIRE• DURHAM, N.C. • W, 3-1 DURHAM, N.H. – Indiana opened its 2005 season with a 3-1 win over the New Hampshire Wildcats on Saturday, Aug. 27. Seniors Kayla Bashore and Nikki Orciuch and junior Lydia Schrott tallied goals in the Hoosier win. Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner recorded save as IU improved its season-opener record to 3-3. Despite an impressive 19 saves from Wildcat goalkeeper, Margaux Shute, the hard-nosed Hoosiers were able to fire three goals past her for the win. In Boone, senior captain Lesley Wiler scored the game’s only goal in the 1-0 win off an assist from junior Morgan Miller and sophomore Amanda Oyler. IU outshot the Tigers 26-3 with 14 of those shots on goal. Indiana also had the advantage in penalty corners. The Hoosiers totaled 10 corners to ASU’s 2. Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner tallied one save in the win.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2005 • INDIANA AT #1 WAKE FOREST• WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. • L, 4-2 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Now at 3-0 in 2005, the Indiana Hoosiers face the three-time defending national champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons. With the score 3-0 to the advantage of Wake at the half, Indiana hung tough and raised the score to 3-2. Scoring for IU was Wiler off an assist from sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen and Morgan Miller off a penalty corner. Meeuwsen and sophomore Meredith Brown had the assists on Indiana’s second goal. Despite 11 saves from Exner and a strong second half, the Demon Deacons took the win, 4-2. SEPTEMBER 9, 2005 • INDIANA VS. PACIFIC• BLOOMINGTON, IND. • W, 6-0 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana opened up at home with a 6-0 win over Pacific. Three Hoosiers, Kayla Bashore, Mallory Reabold and Lydia Schrott, tallied goals in the win. From start to finish the Hoosiers were strong on both sides of the ball. Holding the Tigers to only seven shots, sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner saved all seven in the team’s first shutout of the season. Bashore was the first half’s only scorer and was the second player in school history (Schrott is the other against Northeastern) to score a hat trick.

2005 Game-by-Game Results SEPTEMBER 17, 2005 • INDIANA VS OHIO• BLOOMINGTON, IND • W, 4-1 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana improved its home record to 2-0 with a 4-1 victory over Ohio. Despite a defensive stalemate for most of the first half, junior Lydia Schrott netted a goal to put the score at 1-0 going into the half. The Hoosiers came out firing in the second half with another score from Schrott off an assist from Nikki Orciuch. Two minutes later, Orciuch added some assurance to the Hoosier lead with a penalty corner goal. Morgan Miller added one more for IU off the assit from Mallory Reabold. Goalkeeper Haley Exner notched three saves in the victory. Schrott’s two goals mark the second time she has tallied more than one goal in a game.

SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 • INDIANA VS MISSOURI STATE• BLOOMINGTON, IND. • W, 3-0 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana posted its third shutout win of the 2005 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Missouri State. The Hoosiers took a record 39 shots and 21 penalty corners against the Bears. Despite a 19 save game by Missouri State’s goalkeeper, three Hoosiers were able to net three scores. Sophomore Kate O’Connell scored her first goal of the season off the assist from freshman Katie Kiper. Seniors Mallory Reabold and Lesley Wiler also scored in the win. SEPTEMBER 24, 2005 • INDIANA VS #6 MICHIGAN STATE• BLOOMINGTON, IND. • W, 3-2 (OT) BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 11 Indiana Hoosier avenged three season ending losses to then Michigan State with a 3-2 double-overtime win over the Spartans. The Hoosiers got on the board first with a penalty stroke goal by Kayla Bashore. The Spartans answered back in early in the second period. Lydia Schrott put IU back on top in the 52nd minute, but the game was forced to overtime when Ashley Pernicano knotted the score at two. Midway through the second overtime, Kate O’Connell scored one of the most important goals in Hoosier field hockey history off the assist from Meredith Brown to give Indiana their first ever win against MSU.

2005 Game-by-Game Results SEPTEMBER 25, 2005 • INDIANA VS LINDENWOOD• BLOOMINGTON, IND • W, 6-0 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Coming off of one of the toughest game’s of the season, Indiana continued strong against Lindenwood the next day. IU recorded its fourth shutout of the season in the 6-0 victory. Kayla Bashore scored her second hat trick of the season with three consecutive goals in the first period. Just before the half, Morgan Miller joined the scoring assault with a goal off an assist from Amanda Oyler. Three minutes into the second period, freshman Katie Kiper scored her first career goal off the assist from Meredith Brown. Mallory Reabold was the day’s final scorer with an unassisted goal in the 47th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Jobi Manson recorded her first save of her career and the Hoosier defense held the Lions to only six shots.

Against the Wolverines, the Hoosiers took 10 shots and connected on three to score. Scoring for the IU was senior Nikki Orciuch off the assist from Kayla Bashore in the 19th minute of play. Just after the half, senior Lesley Wiler converted a penalty corner attempt into a 2-0 lead. Credited with the assist were sophomores Meredith Brown and Frederique Meeuwsen. Despite being knotted in a 1-1 tie at the half, IU came out the second half to win the game, 5-2. Scoring for the Hoosiers was Frederique Meeuwsen, Nikki Orciuch, Mallory Reabold (2) and Katie Kiper. Goalkeeper Haley Exner recorded four saves in the win. Meeuwsen netted her first goal of the season in the 29 minute. For the first time this season, Reabold has scored multiple goals in a game. The win over Kent State extended the Hoosiers winning streak to seven games. 2005 Game-by-Game Results OCTOBER 8, 2005 • INDIANA VS NORTHWESTERN • BLOOMINGTON, IND • W, 3-1 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 7 Indiana field hockey team improved its record to 11-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Big Ten after a 3-1 win over Northwestern in Mellencamp Pavilion. Led by senior Kayla Bashore’s two goals, the Hoosiers increased their win streak to eight games and defeated the Wildcats for the first time in program history. Bashore converted senior Mallory Reabold’s blocked shot into a goal in the 16th minute. Almost eight minutes later, junior Rachel Telian found sophomore Kate O’Connell for the game’s second score and O’Connell’s third goal this season. Minutes before the half Northwestern stepped up the pressure to draw a penalty corner in the 31st minute in which Christina Foley turned into the Wildcats’ only score of the day. Bashore netted her tenth goal of the season in the 47th minute after she was left wide open in the circle for the score.

OCTOBER 11, 2005 • INDIANA VS #13 LOUISVILLE • BLOOMINGTON, IND • W, 3-2 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team improved its record in thrilling fashion on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over No. 13 Louisville in Mellencamp Pavilion. The Hoosiers, who remain unbeaten at home, topped the Cardinals courtesy of junior Lydia Schrott’s goal with two minutes left in regulation. In the 14th minute, senior Nikki Orciuch found senior Mallory Reabold w open in front of the cage. IU entered the half with the 1-0 lead for the sixth time this season. In the second period, Orciuch outsmarted Cardinal defenders to get an open shot on goal for her fifth score of the year. Six minutes later, U of L’s Lisa Wasser scored U of L’s first goal of the game. Louisville struck again in the 56th minute when Rachel Overton knotted the game at two off a penalty corner attempt. With minutes left on the clock, Schrott netted her third game-winning goal of the season when she flipped a blocked shot past Cardinal goalkeeper for the 3-2 victory.

After a deadlocked game at the half, both teams scored in the second period to send the game into overtime. Scoring for IU in the second half was sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen. The goal marked her second of the season. After 95 minutes of play, the Hoosiers finally earned the win when junior Morgan Miller scored off a penalty corner. Her fourth goal of the year was assisted by sophomore Meredith Brown and junior Lydia Schrott. Goalkeeper Haley Exner recorded a career-high 16 saves against the Buckeyes making her the winningest single-season goalkeeper in program history.
