This Week: The Metro State baseball team will open the 2010 season at home on Friday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. The doubleheader opens a four-game series, with Saturday’s doubleheader played in Pueblo. Metro State Update: The Roadrunners open the 2010 season with their third head coach in three years as Tom Carcione was hired during the summer of 2009 after Jerry Schemmel resigned to accept a radio position at Colorado State. Carcione inherits seven position players who started at least 20 games last season. However, the pitching staff took at hit with graduation as Ted Jamison and Ross MacDonald are the only returners to have started five or more games last season on the mound. Three all-conference performers return in first/third baseman Jordan Stouffer, centerfielder Chris Redding and righthander Jamison. Stouffer was also named Daktronics second team all-region after batting .331 with a team-high 11 home runs and 54 RBI. Redding hit .362 with 20 doubles, four home runs and a team-high 58 runs scored in his first season at Metro State after coming in from a junior college. Jamison started 10 games on the mound and went 7-4 with a 6.88 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 69.1 innings. He also had the staff ’s only two complete games of the season, including one shutout. Returning starting outfielders Mike Coffey and Marcel Dominguez each batted over .320 last year and lefthander MacDonald was stellar out of the bullpen, before moving to the rotation late in the season. MacDonald went 5-6 with four saves and a 4.72 ERA in 19 appearances and six starts. Metro State must replace shortstop Matt McConnell, who hit .399 with 24 doubles and 11 home runs, before being drafted by Philadelphia in the MLB draft, and catcher Tyree Abshire, who hit .386 with 14 home runs. The two 2009 seniors combined to drive in 117 runs. Scouting the Opponent: Colorado State-Pueblo: The ThunderWolves are picked third in the RMAC Preseason coaches poll after winning the RMAC Tournament and advancing to the NCAA regional tournament in 2009 with a record of 41-22 overall and 24-15 in the RMAC. They return preseason All-RMAC righthander Dillon Meaney, who went 7-1 with a 5.81 ERA last year. Mark Sayas is the top returning position player after hitting .380 with 28 stolen bases as the starting shortstop. Also back is outfielder Zach Hoffman, who batted .372 in 2009. Series History: Colorado State-Pueblo: CSUP leads the all-time series 52-32-1. The Roadrunners hold a 19-16 edge in games played at Metro State, but they trail 32-13-1 in games played in Pueblo. The ThunderWolves won six of nine meetings last spring, including the final four. Metro State in Season-Openers: The Roadrunners are 7-3 in their past 10 season-opening games since 2000 and have gone 16-7 in seasonopening series during that time. Only two of those series were four-game series and Metro State swept all eight games in the two four-game season-opening series. RMAC Preseason Poll: The Roadrunners were picked to finish third in the Mountain Division in the RMAC preseason poll, and sixth overall. Mesa State was chosen to finish first in the division and first overall, with New Mexico Highlands coming in second in each as well. Jordan Stouffer and Chris Redding were both named preseason All-RMAC. Player Honors: Men: Brett Bowman • 2009 Academic All-RMAC first team Brennan Brown

Head Coach Tom Carcione
Other coaching experience includes four years as an assistant coach at the University of South Dakota and a year as the head coach in 2005 at Si Tanka University, an NAIA school in Huron, S.D. While at Si Tanka, he coached the team to a school record 22 wins and its best finish ever in the Dakota Athletic Conference, along with its first-ever regional tournament appearance. The school closed following the 2005 season.
• First year as head coach at Metro State • 22-21 career record (second year) • 0-0 record at Metro State (first year) Tom Carcione will be the fifth head coach in Metro State history in his first season in 2010. Carcione comes to Metro State from the Ottawa Rapidz of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball independent league. He took over as interim manager for Rapidz in mid season 2008 and was named full-time manager this spring, but the team disbanded in April. Prior to his time in Ottawa, Carcione worked as the hitting instructor at NCAA Division I Northern Illinois University for two years. While at NIU, the Huskies had their two highest conference win totals in school history, going 16-11 in 2007 and 16-10 in 2008. Additionally, NIU tied the school record for the most wins in a season with a 34-24 record in 2007. His team batted .292 with 42 home runs in 2007 and .286 with 48 home runs in 2008. Four players signed professional contracts following their collegiate careers. He also spent two years as the pitching coach for the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association independent baseball league. With the Explorers, he helped the team to a 10-game improvement and second-place finish in the North Division during the second half of the 2007 season. Under his coaching, his pitchers consistently ranked among the league’s best. In each of his two years, he had a pitcher lead the league in complete games and had a pitcher rank among the top two in innings pitched. Closer Matt Wilkinson led the American Association in saves in 2007. Carcione also served one year as the bench and bullpen coach of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, helping the team to a Northern League division championship in 1999.
Carcione played college baseball at Texas A&M University as the starting catcher for the Aggies, leading the squad to a 52-15 record in 1988 and a runner-up finish to Cal State Fullerton at the NCAA South Region Tournament that year. Following his time at Texas A&M, Carcione was drafted in the 10th round by the Oakland Athletics and spent five years in their organization, reaching as high as Double A. He then played five more seasons of minor league baseball with Sioux City of the Northern League and Grand Forks of the Prairie League. He received his bachelor’s degree in recreation from the University of South Dakota in 2001. Carcione expects to be on campus on July 14.
