Metro State Softball Notes Metro State, in just the third year of its program, advanced to the College World Series where it was eliminated in the semifinals by the eventual national champion Hawaii Pacific. Head coach Jen Fisher was named CaptainU Coach of the Year and third baseman Tara Mickelson was named Daktronics second team All-America, while shortstop Amber Roundtree and Christie Robinson were both honorable mention selections. College World Series Recap: Metro State was called for 20 illegal pitches in the first four innings--more than double its total all season-as Angelo State went on to a 10-3 win in the opening round. Sarah Rusch scored on a home run by Tara Mickelson in the third inning and Mickelson drove in another run with a double in the fifth. After a day off, the Roadrunners rebounded with a 1-0 victory as Christie Robinson out-dueled consensus first team All-America pitcher Casey Hanes, scattering five singles and striking out four in her ninth shutout of the year. Molly Clark scored the game’s only run on an error with two outs in the top of the fifth. In Saturday’s nightcap, Metro State eliminated top-ranked North Georgia 4-1. The Saints entered the World Series with a 50-0 record and after a first round win on Thursday, dropped two straight to Valdosta State and Metro State. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Jennessa Tesone drilled a double into the right-center gap with two outs, scoring Amber Roundtree to even the score. Molly Clark had two outfield assists in the game, including gunning down a runner at the plate to end the top of the fourth. Mickelson put the Roadrunners in front 2-1 with a solo home run to right-center in the bottom of the inning. Tesone crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth and Robinson held on in the seventh as she again out-dueled a first team All-America pitcher in NGCSU’s Sarah Phillips Metro State’s postseason run ended in Sunday’s first elimination game as No. 3 Hawaii Pacific won 7-2. Robinson was roughed up for a season-high 14 hits, though she allowed just one extra-base hit, a double that was lost in the sun on a routine fly ball. Tesone drove in both of Metro State’s runs in the third inning with a two-out single up the middle. The Sea Warriors went on to win the World Series on Monday against Valdosta State. National Leaders: Tara Mickelson leds all of NCAA Division II with 25 home runs during the season and helped the team break the NCAA Division II single season home run record with 112. Mickelson also ranked second in home runs per game. The Roadrunners also led in home runs per game and slugging percentage. They finished sixth in runs scored/game and second in winning percentage. Complete team and individual rankings are on page 7. RMAC ERA Under 2.50.............. ERA....... IP......... ER Clutch Hitters and Pitchers: Metro State batted .314 with runners in scoring position this season, while holding opponents to just a .200 average in the same situations. seasons in RMAC history. The Roadrunners broke the RMAC ERA record for conference games, posting a 1.47 ERA in 247 innings this year. Metro State set the conference record for runs per game last season, averaging 8.89 in the RMAC season, totaling 320 runs in 36 games. This year, the Roadrunners tied last season’s record with 320 total runs scored, but the team’s 8.21 runs per game were second to last season’s average. No RMAC team has had a team ERA under 4.00 since 2005 until this season and no team has ever had an ERA under 3.00 while averaging over 7.0 runs per game. Metro State also broke the conference home run record with 79 home runs, topping Mesa State’s previous record of 76 in 2006. Conference-only stats started being tracked in 2003. Records Fall at RMAC Tournament: Metro State broke the NCAA single season home run record in the RMAC Championship game against Mesa State. The previous record was 98, set by Mesa State in 2001 in 54 games. Arkansas-Monticello tied the record in 2007 in 66 games, before Metro State (52 games) and Valdosta State (65 games) both tied the record again last season. Metro State had 20 hits in the first championship game against Mesa State, a 19-6 win in seven innings. It was the first time since April 18, 1990, against Colorado Mines that the Roadrunners had 20+ hits in a game. Ground Ball Pitchers: Metro State’s pitchers served up ground balls at an incredibly high rate of 1.72 ground ball outs per fly ball out. Christie Robinson was the best at getting the easy outs with 331 ground ball outs and just 163 fly ball outs (2.03 ratio). Conversely, Metro State’s hitters put the ball in the air for an out at a rate of 1.5 per ground ball out. Records Watch: Nearly all of Metro State’s players are climbing up the lists in the school’s record books. straight Region IX championships, two district championships and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament in 2005 and 2006.

• Third year as head coach • 125-36 Metro State/overall record • 2009 and 2010 RMAC Coach of the Year • 2010 CaptainU National Coach of the Year

Fisher, who had a career record of 355-119, won seven consecutive Region IX Coach of the Year awards. During her time, Otero Junior College averaged over 43 wins a year, including over 50 wins in each of the past three seasons. Fisher’s teams were ranked in the nation’s top 20 during each of the past six years. During the 2005 season, the Rattlers hit a team record 152 home runs and placed seven starters among the nation’s leaders in home runs. The NJCAA’s leading home run hitter was from Otero in 2003, 2004 and 2005. During her tenure, Fisher coached seven NJCAA all-Americans and 13 academic all-Americans, as well as 45 all-Region players and 40 all-Region academic selections. In seven of her eight seasons, the Rattlers finished in the top 20 in the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year. Many of Fisher’s players went on to play softball at the NCAA Division I or II levels, including UNLV, Louisville, CSU-Pueblo and Mesa State.

After a successful inaugural campaign that included a trip to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament, Jen Fisher led Metro State to RMAC regular season and tournament championships and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 as a No. 2 seed in just the program’s second year of existence after it disbanded in 1990. As a result, Fisher was named RMAC Coach of the Year. The Roadrunners finished Fisher’s second season with a record of 40-12 overall and 29-7 in the RMAC as the team led the conference in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored and home runs and finished second in ERA. Included in the win total was a 13-game winning streak in conference play. Metro State tied the NCAA Division II record for home runs in a season with 98, leading the nation in home runs per game and slugging percentage and finishing fifth in batting average and runs scored per game. Juniors Tara Mickelson and Kellie Nishikida became the first players in school history to earn All-America honors in softball after Mickelson finished second in the nation in home runs per game and fifth in runs batted in per game. Nishikida finished in the top-50 in the nation in runs scored, home runs and RBI. The team belted eight home runs in a game against UC-Colorado Springs on April 10 to tie the NCAA record for home runs in a game. Seven of Fisher’s players earned all-conference accolades in 2009. In 2008, Fisher and the Roadrunners went 32-18 overall, the first season of softball for Metro State since the program was reinstated. In conference play, Fisher led Metro State to a 26-11 mark, a second-place finish in the RMAC East Division and a trip to the conference tournament. Six players received all-conference honors, including two (Ashley Johnson, Sarah Rusch) to the second team. Additionally, the Roadrunners led the nation in home runs per game. Besides the Roadrunners’ exploits on the field, Fisher helped establish a partnership with the Denver West High School softball team off the field, as the Roadrunners helped the girls with life skills, academic and personal pressures. The team received a community engagement award from the NCAA for its efforts. Fisher came to Metro State after spending eight years as the head coach at Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colo. During Fisher’s time at Otero, the Rattlers won seven

Fisher came to Otero in 1998-99, after serving as an assistant coach at Rocky Mountain High School and later Poudre High School for four seasons. She was also a head coach for the Buckaroos summer club softball program for four years, leading her 1997 and 1998 teams to third-place finishes at Colorado’s state tournament. A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Fisher prepped at Rocky Mountain High School, where she played softball, basketball and tennis and was the school’s female athlete of the year in 1990. Fisher went on to play college softball at Creighton University for one season, then transferred to Colorado School of Mines. At Mines, she played shortstop and was the Orediggers’ team captain in 1994. After finishing her softball career, Fisher transferred to Colorado State University and earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1997. Fisher and her husband, Joe, have a son, Garrett Wayne, born in October, 2000.
