2013 Hanwood Estate 1913 Series Touriga
1913 Series Touriga 2013 Vineyard Region: Riverina, New South Wales, Australia VINTAGE CONDITIONS: Warm conditions allowed for the fruit to reach maturity two weeks earlier than average. This allowed for ideal picking conditions and pristine fruit being delivered to the winery at its optimum maturity and maximum flavour level.
This parcel of Touriga is an old vine block on the Hanwood Estate surrounding our 100 year old winery, Farm 130 Block 13. Vintage 2013 is the first time in recent history it has been made into a dry table wine. In 2013 only 50% of the block was harvested for its traditional wine style, Hanwood Tawny, the other 25% went to a Vintage tawny named Jack, after Jack McWilliam. Touriga is a Portuguese variety grown for their famous Port fortified wines of the Douro Valley. The old vines off Block 13 delivered some pristine fruit in 2013 with the naturally low crop producing small berries of intense fruit flavours and mature tannins. This high quality fruit set the winemaking team up with a great base to craft a high quality wine from. COLOUR: Youthful crimson red. AROMA: Vibrant morello cherries and fresh violet leap out of the glass on this alluringly aromatic wine. PALATE: Juicy berry fruits dominate, giving great freshness and supple almost Pinot-like mid palate. The finish is savoury and long with round tannins making it a lovely medium bodied wine that will partner beautifully with many cuisines. Vinification & Maturation: Harvested in the cool of the morning to retain the gentle aromatics. Carefully de-stemmed into an open top fermenter and cold soaked for 3 days at 10ºC. During ferment the wine was plunged daily, and after a period of 8 days was pressed, then allowed to settle into old French puncheons. Old oak was selected to allow a gentle softening through the time in barrel on light lees but with nil influence of new oak aromatics or tannin to cloud the purity of the fruit. Matured in barrel for 15 months.
Alcohol: 14% Residual Sugar (g/L): 0.35 pH: 3.62 Acidity: 6.22 g/L Peak Drinking: For immediate consumption but will reward medium term cellaring.
