Notes: • The women’s team was picked third and the men’s team was picked fourth in the RMAC preseason coaches’ poll. • Adams State and Western State are picked first and second, respectively, on both the men’s and women’s side, with Colorado Mines predicted third in the RMAC in men’s cross country. • Breanna Hemming and Janelle Lincks are both preseason all-RMAC picks. • Metro State sent both its men’s and women’s teams to nationals in 2013 for the first time since 2009 after both finished a program-best fourth at the South Central Region Championships. • The women’s team’s eighth-place finish at nationals was the best in school history and the mens’ 13th-place finish was the second-best ever. • Hemming broke the school’s women’s 6k record in 21:16.70, placing seventh for the best finish in school history at the NCAA championships (previous-best was 52nd). • Hemming and Lincks became the school’s first two female All-Americans. • Kirk Harvey and Nick Kadlec also earned All-America for the men, the first time Metro State has had two men’s All-Americans in the same season. • Harvey (10k, 30:48) and Lincks (6k, 21:31) both broke the school record by exactly one second at the regional meet. • Metro State’s women tied their best finish ever at the RMAC championships, placing third (also in 2011). • Lincks broke the school record and had the best finish ever for a Metro State runner at the RMAC championships, placing second in 21:32.9. • Lincks became the first Metro State cross country runner to be named first team allRMAC. 2014 Preseason Outlook: Men’s top-7 returning/lost: 3/4 Men’s letterwinners returning/lost: 6/8 Men’s preseason RMAC poll: 4th place Women’s top-7 returning/lost: 5/2 Women’s letterwinners returning/lost: 5/5 Women’s preseason RMAC poll: 3rd place Metro State History: • Metro State is in its 10th year with a Division II cross country program. • It had a cross country program in the early 1980s that disbanded after the 1985 season. • Director of Athletics Joan McDermott brought cross country back in 2005. • Metro State has had four men’s All-Americans and two women’s All-Americans. • First year as head coach at Metro State, sixth year overall • Served as assistant at Metro State from 2011-13 (two years) 2013-14 • Led the men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams all to nationals for first time in school history • Led Metro State’s cross country teams to top-15 finishes at nationals • Women’s team placed eighth (best in school history) and men placed 13th • Coached four All-Americans in cross country, including first two female All-Americans in school history • Led both teams to a fourth-place finish at regionals and the women to third at RMAC championships, men fifth at RMAC championships • Coached Metro State’s first-ever female NCAA All-Americans in the distance medley relay team and Breanna Hemming (mile) • Kirk Harvey also earned All-America in the 3,000 meters in indoor track • The Roadrunners totaled nine national qualifiers in indoor track, the most in school history • Coached two All-Americans in outdoor track • Coached two Academic All-Americans Prior to becoming head coach • Served as Metro State’s sprints/jumps coach in track and assistant cross country coach for two seasons • Helped Darius Reed become Metro State’s first non-distance runner to qualify for nationals in track • Assisted with two individual athletes (Nick Kadlec and Janelle Lincks) qualifying for nationals in 2012 in cross country • Assisted with Lincks and Breanna Hemming becoming the first female All-Americans in track in 2013 • Reed has earned All-America three times (2012 in 110m hurdles, 2013 in 60m hurdles and 110m hurdles) • Also helped men’s cross country finish ninth at NCAA Championships • Helped two sprinters earn all-conference honors during indoor 2012, the only two all-conference athletes Prior to Metro State • Served as head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Buena Vista University (Iowa) for four years • Coached 28 all-conference athletes, 14 national qualifiers and eight All-Americans at the NCAA Division II school • Helped BV’s men’s indoor track team finish fifth and the outdoor team finish eighth in Division III in 2009 • Served as head cross country and track coach at Mount Marty College (S.D.) in 2006-07 • Coached four national qualifiers at the NAIA school • Served as graduate assistant at NCAA Division I University of Northern Iowa for two years Education • Earned bachelor’s degree in education from Buena Vista in 2004 • Ran four years of cross country at BV and was three-year team captain in track and two-year captain in cross country • Three-time conference placewinner in track • Competed in track for one year at UNI and earned all-Missouri Valley Conference and helped team to conference championships in indoor and outdoor track • Member of third-fastest 4x800-meter relay team in school history • Earned master’s degree in exercise physiology from Northern Iowa in 2006
