Roadrunner Review: The 14th-ranked Metro State men’s cross country team place third among 15 non-Division I schools at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder on Oct. 2, and the women’s team finished ninth among 15 non-Division I’s as well. The men came in behind top-ranked Adams State and No. 2 Western State. Carl Arnold III placed 15th in 26:20, 54 seconds faster than his previous 8k personal-best time. Three others also placed in the top-25 finishers. Eiger Erickson finished 19th in 26:38, followed by Shawn Lindbom at No. 23 in 26:51 and Zach Mares in 25th place in 27:01. Kyle Simcox rounded out the top-five for Metro State, finishing 36th in 27:43. Joining Arnold with personal-best times were Erickson, Lindbom and Mares. Xenia Flores was the story of the women’s squad as she finished eighth and broke the school’s 6k record, finishing in 22:07. Her time topped Danielle Kehoe’s time of 22:24.3 set at the regional championships last season.
Home events are in BOLD Head Coach John Supsic • First year as head coach
Supsic was named the head track and cross country coach at Metro State following the 2009 cross country season after he helped the men’s and women’s cross country teams both qualify for the NCAA Championships as an assistant coach. The men’s team placed 14th and the women finished 21st. Both teams finished in the top-five in the highly competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Prior to assisting with Metro State in the fall of 2009, he served for over a year as an assistant with Regis University’s cross country team, designing workouts for student-athletes. Supsic had been an accountant in real estate from 2004-09. He graduated from Towson University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. While at Towson, Supsic was a two-year captain of the cross country team and earned USTFCCCA AllAcademic honors three times. The Baltimore native continued his running career with the Boulder Distance Project for four years under the former marathon world record holder, Steve Jones. His team won the U.S. marathon relay championship in 2006.
Behind Flores came Vickey VanAlstine-Tauer, who came in 44th in 24:37. Julia Hernandez placed 50th, followed by Kery Allen in 65th and Krystin Yarkosky in 68th. Metro State Season Outlook: The men’s team returns three of its top five runners, led by Eiger Erickson. Zach Mares and Nate Newland were both consistently in the top-five a year ago. Carl Arnold III and Shawn Lindbom also return, while Kyle Simcox is back from a two-year church mission. The men must replace Anthony Luna and Brandon Johnson, who both earned All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors last year. The women bring back return two of their topfive from last year, highlighted by All-RMAC performer Xenia Flores. Kery Allen narrowly missed all-conference honors last year and returns for her junior year. Also returning is Krystin Yarkosky. Judith Chavez returns to the team after sitting out 2009 and Julia Hernandez is expected to be a contributer, transferring from Colorado Mines. Supsic Named Head Coach After 2009: John Supsic was named the head coach on Dec. 2, 2009, replacing interim coach Sean Nesbitt. Supsic was an assistant under Nesbitt last fall after spending a year as an assistant at Regis.

Men Open Season in Top-25: The Metro State men’s cross country team is ranked No. 14 in the USTFCCCA preseason poll. The ranking matches the team’s finish at the past two NCAA Championships. The top three teams in the poll all hail from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, including No. 1 Adams State, No. 2 Western State and No. 3 Colorado Mines. Metro State is the only other RMAC school ranked. Men and Women Ranked in Region: The Metro State men’s cross country team is ranked sixth in the Central Region. The women’s team dropped out of the top-10 in the region earlier this season. RMAC Preseason Poll: The Metro State men’s and women’s cross country teams were both picked to finish fourth in the RMAC preseason coaches polls. Adams State was the preseason favorite in both polls and Western State was picked as the runner-up. Colorado Mines picked third for the men and Mesa State was third for the women. Metro State’s Xenia Flores was a preseason all-conference runner for the women. She finished eighth at the RMAC Championships last fall. The Roadrunner men’s team finished fourth and the women finished fifth at the RMAC Championships in 2009.
