This Week: Metro State’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will head to Fort Collins, Colo., on Friday for the CSU Classic at 5 p.m. The 4-mile race will take place at Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins. There will be six teams for the men and women, including Metro State, Colorado State, Adams State, Air Force, Northern Colorado and Garden City C.C. (Kan.). Men Open Season in Top-25: The Metro State men’s cross country team opened the season ranked 18th in the USTFCCCA preseason poll, but dropped out of this week’s top-25. Last season, the men opened the year ranked 16th, their first-ever ranking in the NCAA Division II USTFCCCA poll. That 16th ranking is also the highest-ever for Metro State as the men’s team finished 19th in the final regular season poll last year. The Metro State women’s team has never been ranked. Regionally Ranked: The men’s team is currently ranked seventh in the Central Region in the USTFCCCA preseason poll. The women are ranked eighth in the region.

Home events are in BOLD Head Coach Sean Nesbitt • First year as head coach • Served as top assistant under former head coach Pete Julian for four years

RMAC Preseason Poll: Both the men’s and the women’s squads were picked to finish fourth in the RMAC preseason coaches polls. Adams State was chosen as the favorite on each side.

Sean Nesbitt begins his fifth season with the cross country program at Metro State in 2009-10. Nesbitt has been named interim head cross country coach after spending four years as an assistant. He has also been an assistant track coach during the three years since the program’s inception. During his time as an assistant, Nesbitt assisted with all aspects of the cross country and track programs and oversaw the recruiting for both sports. The Roadrunners have steadily improved since the inception of the cross country program in 2005 and the track program in 2006-07. During the 2008-09 season, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in the top-20 at the national meet with the men taking 14th and the women 19th. The men’s indoor track team placed 10th and the outdoor team finished 16th. In addition, Nesbitt helped coach junior Anthony Luna to national championships in the 800 meter run in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Metro State has had 11 All-Americans between cross country and track since 2005 and 55 runners earn All-RMAC honors.

Returners Honors: Danielle Kehoe (sophomore athletically, but is expected to graduate next spring) earned third team All-RMAC honors last fall, becoming the first Roadrunner, man or woman, to earn allconference honors from the RMAC. Senior Anthony Luna became Metro State’s first-ever national qualifier at the NCAA Championships in 2007, but missed the end of last season with an injury. He is back and healthy after capturing NCAA championships in the indoor and outdoor track 800 meter runs this past spring.
