THE ROAD AHEAD The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team will play three matches this week. The Owls are on the road on Thursday, Oct. 23 as they’ll take on American International. Southern Connecticut will then return home to Pelz Gymnasium to lay a tri-match against Molloy and Merrimack beginning at 11 a.m. A LOOK BACK The Owls went 1-2 last week with a Northeast-10 Conference win over So. New Hampshire, 3-2, and losses against Adelphi and Stonehill. ALL-TIME VERSUS AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL The Yellow Jackets holds a 23-7 edge in the all-time series over the Owls. ALL-TIME VERSUS MOLLOY The Owls lead the all-time series against Molly, 13-12. ALL-TIME VERSUS MERRIMACK The Warriors hold a 15-8 edge in the all-time series over the Owls. WHO RANKS WHERE? Sophomore Nicole Hauser continues to lead the Owls’ offense with a combined total of 177 kills (2.60 k/s). Defensively, Morgan Carman ranks first on the team in digs (290) while sophomore Briauna Tutwiler leads the team in blocks (37). CARLSON WITH THE ASSIST Taylor Carlson currently leads the team in assists with 270 (4.03 a/s). As of today (Oct. 22) she has 901 career assists, just 99 shy of her 1,000 career assist. DOUBLE TROUBLE Nicole Hauser currently leads the team in double-double with three. She posted her third double-double of the season against SNHU, 13 kills and 20 assists. Hauser recorded her first double-double of the season against Nyack and her second double-double of the season against Dowling College. NORTHEAST-10 WEEKLY HONORS For the third time this season, Nicole Hauser has been selected to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll. Morgan Carman was selected to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly

PREVIOUSLY AGAINST MOLLOY Despite a 10 kill and nine dig performance from Kelly Gunneson, the SCSU volleyball team lost to Molloy College in five sets, 3-2 on Sept. 11. PREVIOUSLY AGAINST MERRIMACK The SCSU volleyball team fell to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Merrimack College, 3-0, on Thursday, Sept. 25 at Bert Hammel Court. Freshman Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.) tallied a team-high nine kills in the loss. FRESHMAN SUCCESS Alexandria Jurgens posted her first career double-double (10 kills and 12 digs) in the 3-0 win against Holy Family. Jurgens was named Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week as well as CT Army National Guard/SCSU Athlete of Week back on Set. 22. O’CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN Juniors Morgan Carman and Kelly Gunneson will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall. IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL The Owls were selected to finish 10th according to the Northeast-10 Conference coaches’ poll. LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR The Owls posted their sixth consecutive winning season during the 2013 campaign and closed the year with 17 wins. SCSU also narrowly missed out on a bid to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. EIGHT IS GREAT The Owls have eight student-athletes returning from last year’s team, including Morgan Carman, Taylor Carlson, Kelly Gunneson and Nicole Hauser, all of whom have seen time as starters in their careers. OWLS WELCOME NINE NEWCOMERS The Owls welcome 10 student-athletes to the team this year: Carly Balskus, Jasmin Barrett, Emily Carver, Alexandria Jurgens, Taylor Macdowell, Alexandra Nimz, Alisha Noble, Haley Samuelson, Sean Taylor and Briauna Tutwiler. GUNNESON NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM Kelly Gunneson was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team for her work in the classroom and on the court last fall. academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. MCVEY EARNS ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS Senior Lauren McVey received year-end honors from the Northeast-10 Conference, as voted on by the league’s coaches. McVey was named to the Third-Team for the second consecutive season. ON DECK The Owls are back in action on Oct. 28 as the team welcomes American International to Pelz Gymnasium for a Northeast-10 Conference clash.
