November 2015
This month, we are blessed to have North American missionary Kyle Sears share about one of the keys to reaching people for Christ who have little or no understanding of the Gospel. Kyle and Erika Sears serve as church planters in Pasadena, CA, seeking to establish Redemption Church.
Phil Heiser - Pacific Regional Pastor Listening is a key skill for a North American missionary. Since we believe that our God is a missionary God - sending His Son and Spirit, and indeed the church itself, into the world - we must listen for His activity among us. I believe God is at work in the lives of my friends who have yet to receive His grace in Kyle & Erika Sears with their three children: Kathryn, Kylie and YoSeb. salvation. Therefore, I must intentionally take the opportunity to listen to my friends and mine our conversations for evidence of God’s activity revealed in their hopes and frustrations. Shared experiences recounted over shared meals are prime opportunities to engage in this type of listening. My friends and I have been participating in a live-action game called “escape rooms” where, working together as a team, we seek to escape from a locked room in under an hour. Our evening concludes with cheesesteak sandwiches or bowls of ramen as we recount our experience. So far, each of these evenings has led to moments of gospel conversation as I share a Christian perspective during our discussions. As we try to be faithful listeners to God among our friends, Erika and I ask that you pray for us. Continued moments that establish presence in the lives of our friends - sharing meals and stories inevitably lead to meaningful conversations. As we seek to embody the hope of the gospel, we pray that the aroma of Christ draws our friends into saving faith.
