A Look at the Brewers

The Vassar College women’s volleyball team opens its 2015 home slate this afternoon, hosting a tri-match with University of New England and Lehman College. The Brewers are coming off a season-opening victory at Rutgers-Camden, earning the victory in straight sets. Junior Gabby Miller led the attack with seven kills, while Devan Gallagher, Bria Corham and Alex Sams all posted six kills apiece. Senior libero Chloe Hallum chalked up 17 digs in the win, while Miller added 10 digs as well. The Brewers and head coach Jonathan Penn were picked to finish fifth in the Liberty League poll this year, as VC looks to get back into the postseason tournament after missing it for the first time in seven years last season. Miller returns as the leading hitter for the Brewers in 2015, after she contributed 155 kills as a sophomore. Captains Chloe Hallum and Sierra Tobin will lead the back row for VC.

A Look at THE Lightning

The Lightning of Lehman College were selected to finish third in the 2015 CUNYAC Preseason Poll after posting a 13-14 record during the 2014 campaign. Lehman started their season Tuesday evening with a come-from-behind win over Maritime College, as the Lightning rallied from two sets down to win in five games. Jo-Marie Aquino chalked up 21 kills for the Lightning, while Salviera Gonzalez added 14 in the win. Aquino also finished with a match-best 34 digs. Aquino was voted as the preseason Player of the Year in the CUNYAC, but did not play last season for Lehman. Back in 2013, the now senior posted a team-high 333 kills to go with 259 digs. LC did lose its top two hitters from a year ago in Cari English and Julia Mercado, but Gonzalez was a weapon as well as she finished with 125 terminations and a .146 hitting percentage for the 2014 season. Head coach Elvis Rodriguez returns to the sidelines for his third season with LC.

A Look at THE Nor’Easters

The University of New England is coming off an 11-16 season in 2014, going 4-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The young UNE squad, which doesn’t have a senior on the team in 2015, posted the third-highest hitting percentage in the CCC a season ago. Also, defensively the Nor’Easters chalked up the second most solo blocks in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. UNE did lose leading attacker Leah Janelle this season, but the Nor’Easters bring back Grayson Szczepaniak to the squad for her junior campaign. The now captain finished with 232 kills a season ago, adding 59 total blocks and 111 digs. Sophomore Courtney Lambrese contributed 150 kills in 2014 along with a team-best 60 total rejections, and junior libero Nikki Mathewson paced the Nor’Easters with 323 total digs. The University of New England brings in four freshmen to this year’s squad.

BREWER BIO on ... Sierra TObin Tobin, a junior defensive specialist from Santa Cruz, California, has stepped up this year as a leader of this young squad. Voted as a team captain in 2015, Tobin has been a very important part of the back row defense for the Brewers over her two-plus years with the team, as her athleticism and intelligence defensively have been great in the serve receive. Tobin is a very good passer out of the back, and reads opposing attacks very well. Tobin comes into the season with 61 total matches played, starting nine times over her tenure with the Brewers. Tobin posted 144 digs last season for VC, which ranked fourth on the squad while averaging 1.47 digs per set. Tobin has also been very strong from the service line, as she registered 20 aces a year ago and now has 42 for her career. She also led the team in serving percentage last year with a very strong .942 clip.
