2016 Gardening Lecture Series The Cooperative Extension system was created in 1914 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the research from the landgrant university in each state to the people of that state. On April 21, 1917 during World War One the Home Defense Committee and other patriotic groups called a public meeting in the Suffern High School and the Rockland County Cooperative Extension system was started in an effort to aid the war effort and increase food production by obtaining expert advice from the Agricultural College at Ithaca. Almost 100 years later Rockland County Cooperative Extension is still providing a connection to the research-based information from Cornell University. Our mission is to help people improve their lives and communities through educational partnerships that put research, knowledge and practical experience to work. We address current issues facing Rockland residents, focusing on our five primary mission areas. Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
