2016 HOME GARDENING LECTURE SERIES
Carol Gracie will speak about the beauty of many of our summer wildflowers and their fascinating life histories. Her talk will highlight wildflower pollination, seed dispersal, predation and uses in modern medicine. You will learn how these colorful wildflowers interact with insects in positive, negative and even diabolical ways. Carol Gracie led natural history tours at the NYBG for 25 years. She will share her knowledge of plants in the Amazon, the Galapagos and Europe. Carol is the author/photographer of Spring Wildflower’s of the Northeast: A Natural History and co-author/photographer of Wildflowers in the Field and Forest: A Field Guide to the Northeastern United States. Directions to Chappaqua Library: From the Saw Mill River Parkway, take Exit 32. Continue to light at Rte. 120. Is there something wrong with your lawn? Tamson Yeh will explain how to achieve a healthy, attractive lawn while reducing pesticides and fertilizers. She will describe how to remove all or part of the lawn in easy ways and add pollinator-friendly, native plants to your yard. Learn about using the “buffer stuffer” wheel to accurately figure the types and numbers of plants needed. Tamson Yeh is an entertaining speaker who has worked for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County for the past twelve years. She has a PhD. in Plant Sciences and a M.S. in Animal and Veterinary Science. Her book, Can My Petunia be Saved?, is a practical, lighthearted approach to achieving a happy, healthy garden. Habitats of the Northeast are facing unprecedented challenges impacting our home gardens. What are the ecological consequences of invasives? He will explain which species can be assumed safe and which species may become extinct. Bernd will challenge us to become stewards of our natural heritage. Bernd Blossey is an Associate Professor in the Natural Resources Department at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and is the director of the Ecology and Management of Invasive Plants Program. Bernd continues to develop and implement programs for biological weed control, deer management and land management. Louise, a singer, claimed the sunny borders surrounding their home for annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs and small trees which bloom all season long.
