2017 KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL Game #6 Thorobreds (2-3) VS. West Virginia State University (2-3) Saturday, Oct. 7 -- 1:30 P.M. ET-- Alumni Stadium -- Frankfort, Ky.

JOHN L. SMITH-- 2ND SEASON AT KSU (5-10) 156-123 (.559) -- 24TH SEASON AS A HEAD COACH John L. Smith took over as head coach of the Kentucky State football program in December 2015. In his first season, Smith led KSU to a historical campaign, notching the program’s first ever SIAC West Division Championship and a spot in the conference championship game. The Thorobreds finished the season 4-7 with monumental back-to-back nail bitting wins against Miles College and #5 Tuskegee University. The win against the Golden Tigers was the first win by KSU against a nationally ranked top five opponent, since joining the NCAA Division II rankings in 1988. At the conclusion of the season, six Thorobreds were named to the AllConference squad while Smith was named the SIAC Coach of the Year. Before his time with KSU, Smith spent three seasons at Division II Fort Lewis College, where he inherited a team that had been 0-10 in 2012 and posted a 7-4 record this year, equaling the program’s best record in 40 years. Prior to his time at Fort Lewis, Smith served as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas from 2009-11 before serving as the team’s head coach for one season in 2012. He also spent four seasons at Michigan State, where he went 22-26 from 2003-06 and won Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2003. In addition to the Big Ten Coach of the Year award, Smith was a national finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in 2000. He has made 12 postseason bowl or playoff appearances, and he is one of just 19 coaches in collegiate football history to take three different schools to bowl games. Before his time at Michigan State, Smith went 41-21 at Louisville from 1998-2002, a stretch that included five straight winning seasons, five straight bowl appearances, and two conference championships. Smith also has head coaching stops at Utah State University as well as the University of Idaho, where he went 53-21 from 1989-94 and left as the school’s winningest head coach. An Idaho Falls native, Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Mathematics from Weber State University, where he was a linebacker and quarterback in his collegiate playing days. He also holds a Master of Science in Physical Education from the University of Montana. In addition to his head coaching experience, Smith has served in various assistant coaching roles at Idaho, Weber State, and Montana, as well as with the University of Nevada, University of Wyoming, Washington State University, and the St. Louis Rams.

ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS

At the beginning of 2016 fall camp, upwards of 100 student-athletes walked on to the practice field of head coach John L. Smith’s first season with KSU football. Following a successful first season where the Thorobreds reached new heights, the start of the 2017 camp saw numbers excel past 140 student-athletes vying for an opportunity to take the field on Saturdays at Alumni Stadium. Going into the opening game of the 2017 season, over 63 student athletes help make up the roster that was not on the 2016 active roster. Of those 63 players, 47 of them are true freshmen, including six others who will be red shirted.

Welcome and Welcome Back

Along with several new names on the field, the Thorobreds welcome a few familiar names and two new ones on the sidelines in 2017. Joining the football staff as the assistant head coach and secondary coach is Wade Green. Green was the defensive coordinator at the United States Military Preparatory School from 2009-2016. Another new name will be tight ends coach Tobijah Hughley. Football fans of the Commonwealth may remember Hughley as a member of the University of Louisville football team from 2013-2016. Two familiar names to the coaching staff are running backs coach Matthew Amburgey and graduate assistant Ray Malone. Both Amburgey and Malone are graduates of KSU and former players. Malone was a part of the 2016 West Division Championship team and was named the Most Valuable Player for the Thorobreds in the conference championship game.
